What are your newest musical discoveries?
I'm always looking for new, good stuff. Here are a few of mine: Beirut, Thomas Dybdahl, Newton Faulkner, Mum, Sara Tavares and Ingrid Michaelson. There are a ton more but I'm not in front of my music collection right now.

1. if you fold a piece of tissue paper over a comb,
and hold it against your lips and hum,
it sounds like a kazoo.

2. Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright
I'm an old fart so I'm used to music I grew up with. These guys are very good, though.

3. I just heard the Buckley album for the first time
just before Christmas. It was pretty ahead of it's time. Wasn't it recorded about 10 years ago?

4. you may like Andrew Bird or Nick Drake then
Bird's early stuff is very old-style swing, and his later albums are more experimental. Great voice.

Drake you may have heard on a... VW I think... commercial a few years back. Also amazing voice.

7. I've already got Nick Drake.
I love him. It's kind of sad how these guys, Drake and Buckley in particular, had so much talent but their inner demons did them in.

I've got the 4-disc box set. And I do like Andrew Bird. He's all over the map, musically.

The re-issue was full of crap he recorded in his garage.

It's incredible. His voice just soars at times. What a shame he was around for such a short time.

6. The Hot Club of San Francisco
And other 'Hot Club' groups from around the country. I love this style of music - high-energy instrumentals with lots of swing and Django Reinhardt influences.

Here is my free streaming Pandora station dedicated to this music: The Hot Club of San Francisco Radio.

The Pandora station in my sig is my 'kitchen-sink' station, with all of my old and new favorites mixed together into a spicy gumbo.

10. It's big for me...
It's a big deal for me to come across new stuff that I like as I've pretty much shut out top40/indy/grunge (whateverthehell it's called this year-- it's still rock and roll to me...) since about '88.

So the two that actually stand out in my mind, and that I've gone to the trouble to listen to more of their stuff are... <drum roll> Polyphonic Spree and Cake. Probably old news to everyone here already, but I was pleasantly surprised by both.

12. There's a lot of good new stuff--you just have to look hard to find it.
I'm an old fart who quit listening to rock for years. I was pretty much just into classical & jazz. But when my daughter was around 12 and started getting into music, I figured it was time to take another listen to some of the stuff being done. I know everyone here frowns on downloading music, but it's a great way to find out if you like someone or not. A heck of a lot better than shelling out $19 only to find out the group sucks. A couple of good sources are allmusic.com and gnod.net

13. It's not so much that I don't think there's anything both new and good
It's not so much that I don't think there's anything both new and good, it's just the older I get, the more I discover older stuff that I get turned onto-- 50's jazz, 20's tin pan alley, 40's big band. 30's folk, etc...

There's not enough hours in my life to hear it all, so I've been keeping my ears tuned more towards the first half of the 20th century for "new" stuff.

That aside, since i don't work for the RIAA, go to town w/ your d/l's! I may or may not be doing the same! :)

11. 60 Ft. Dolls, a Welsh band circa mid-'90s.
Sort of like a cross between the Jam and Husker Du, but more the former than the latter (the vocalist is a dead ringer for Paul Weller). Check out "Happy Shopper" or "Stay."

But they do that sound so much better. Do a search on Youtube for them, especially the track "Epic".

29. Triad Pairs.
Combine two triads (major or minor) forming a six note scale.

Example: Two triads a whole step apart. Combine a C major triad (C,E,G) and a D major triad (D, F#, A) in various patterns.

Play this ascending pattern in eighth notes E,G,E,C,F#,A,F#,D,G,C,G,E,A,D,A,F#,C,E,C,G,D,F#,D,A,E,G,E,C,etc.

Mix them starting on different notes in ascending and descending patterns.

A C major and D major triad pair can be applied to these chords.

C maj #11
F#7 b9 b13 b5
E min7 b5
D7 sus 11
A min 7
Bb maj #5

Another Example: Combinations of a C major triad and a Bb minor triad can be used over these changes:

C7 b9
G7 b5#9
Eb 7 b9
Db maj7 #11

Oh, you meant listening music....
