Bands you loved THEN but just cannot listen to NOW

I'm a BIG Jefferson Airplane fan. As we all know, they pretty much flamed out with a couple of less-than-spectacular albums ("Bark" and "Long John Silver") and a weak, kiss-off live album ("30 Seconds Over Winterland"), and then came back without Jorma, Jack and Marty as "Jefferson Starship." Marty returned, Grace left, Marty left, Mickey Thomas joined, Grace came back, Kanter left, Jefferson Starship became "Starship," and "We Built This City" became the final nail in the coffin of All Things Jefferson.

Paul Kantner, meanwhile, regained the legal right to call his band "Jefferson Starship" and to this day tours with Marty, sometimes Jack, and every once in a while Grace shows up.

But the four core post-Airplane "Jefferson Starship" albums...Dragon Fly, Red Octopus, Spitfire and Earth...I made a mix CD from those albums yesterday and when I was driving around with it in the car this morning realized "Times have changed and so have I"...the songs were too sugary, too deliberately aimed toward getting airplay. They have a heavy 80s feel, very dated.

What bands did YOU love THEN, and maybe not so much NOW?

2. Yes, but I don't count it among the post-JA "Starship" albums

I see it as a Kantner solo project that (coincidentally) was called "Jefferson Starship," but when I think of the career of Jefferson Starship, I think "Dragon Fly / Red Octopus / Spitfire / Earth."

"Blows Against The Empire" was another album like Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name"...a one-off fluke...so I agree with you on that album but still feel the same about the four post-"Blows" Starship albums I named.

I have no use for anything after "Monster".

6. I loved the very early stuff...

..."Don't Go Back To Rockville," "Second Guessing," "Radio Free Europe"...and I still love it.

I also like "Kenneth," "Crush With Eyeliner" and "Circus Envy" from "Monster." Great, crunchy stuff. I've barked on command a few times myself.

They more or less lost me with "Everybody Hurts." Didn't care for that song at all.

4. Led Zeppelin....

really just seems so juvenile now when I listen to them...But most of the music from my youth seems like that.

7. My biggest Zeppelin complaint...

...is that they just flat-out STOLE shit from Willie Dixon and others under the premise that they so radically "changed" the material that it became "Plant / Page compositions."

Horseshit.

They're thieves.

And by the same token, they ruthlessly pursued ANYONE who DARED mess with THEIR legacy.

I grew up with the legacy and can't escape it, but felt THEN...as I do NOW...that as human beings, LZ basically SUCKED. Really, really SUCKED.

5. Barenaked Ladies

I really enjoyed everything from "Gordon" through "Born On A Pirate Ship". "Rock Spectacle" was okay, but not really reflective of their live show. After that, they really started to lose me (although there were 1 or 2 tunes on each successive album that I enjoyed).

I was heavily into them circa "Land of Rape and Honey" and "A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste". I went back and listened to those albums recently (on cassette as I didn't own a CD player until the 1990s), and I found them almost unlistenable. Once they went all thrash-metally in the early 90s I lost interest.

Nowdays I could honestly give two shits about them either way.

10. Emerson Lake and Palmer. And Rush. Which is unfortunate, since

they're a killer band, but I cannot stand Geddy Lee's voice, holy shit...would it have killed them to hire a SINGER???

11. Grace Slick was on the KUSI morning news here yesterday...

...showing off some of her paintings. She's having a show of her paintings at the Wentworth Gallery in La Jolla today and tomorrow, and she will be there in person both days. It was great fun to see her on the news and her her reminisce about her days in rock. They gave her almost 20 minutes of airtime.
