Do you personally know anyone who was offended by the SB halftime show?
I have yet to meet anyone personally, in real life, who was actually offended by Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson's halftime show. Do you know anyone who was actually offended or outraged by this "incident"?

Me and just about all my family.

20. I found the erectile dysfunction ads much more disturbing
With verbal warnings about 'call your doctor if you experience an erection that lasts longer than 4 hours.'

Little children have presumably, most of them, seen a woman's breast. But have they ever considered a four-hour erection? Anyone have to explain that?

29. It wasn't sex
it was celebration of violence against women.

Rape is not about sex, it's about power.

2. Yeah
A conservative writer friend.

The dh and I were watching CNN for the Moveon commercial. I probably would have been offended by the lack of quality of the music more than by the breast.

6. I'm always offended by it
Edited on Thu Feb-12-04 08:06 PM by Rabrrrrrr
because it's always artistic crap, and just proves to me that America, when it comes to "artistic celebration and interest" is the equivalent of rolling around in your own feces.

So, the boob didn't offend me - the stuntish and illiterate nature of it, and especially the tacit approval of violence against women meme it suggested, did. And the inclusion of talentless hackjob non-musicians in this, and countless other, halftime shows, pre-game shows, and etc.

That's what offends me. Not the boob.

Now if they had someone like, say, Steve Reich perform "music for Four Organs" while Brian Eno and David Bowie slowly drive a reel-to-reel tape drive and sampling unit through the heads of Justin Timberlake and Snoopy Doggy Doggy Doo Doo, then I wouldn't be offended.

9. Oh I SO agree with you.
Crap it was. I was however offended in another way. It wasn't the boob that offended me it was the manner of the way it was exposed. Made me think of rape and violence.

14. Yes, me, too
I just added that to my post - I left it out.

Though as much as it had a ritualistic violence-against-women is okay attitude to it, I'm really so much more offended that our culture just cannot, for some reason, get a hold of the idea of doing something that's actually artistic and creative and wonderful, and instead celebrates mediocrity and utter banality.

25. I wish I knew
At some point, there was a catastrophic shift in the natural psyche that went from an interest in things intellectual into a lowest common denominator Archie Bunker attitude that thinks Budweiser is the pinnacle of creation but an Belgium open-vat brew is "nasty", and that example can be paralleled into every art form, and every food genre.

Thus, people drive cross country, maybe even come to Times Square in NYC, but only want *@&#%@ Olive Garden and McDonalds because it's "safe" and "not so tasty that I have to think about it."

I don't know when that shift happened, but it happened a hell of a long time ago. Proabbly right after World war II.

But I do know this - the final, ultimate nail in the coffin was when the Olive Garden built the restaurant right at the pinnacle point of Times Square. That's when I knew that America had truly died as a viable culture.

24. Yup, agree.
I worked really hard to give my kids a good, solid musical background. Partly because I am a musician, partly in defense against that crap. Thankfully both are music majors with good taste, different than mine, but good solid music. I hate this other crap and none of it is real either. It is all image IMO.

I wasn't offended by Janet's breast, but by a staged act of violent disrobing against a woman. I hope that young boys and girls didn't see that act as an acceptable way to treat women.

12. I was as was my fiance
We had his mother and her 80 year old male friend over to watch the game. They were already uncomfortable with the way the halftime show was being presented and it only worsened when the "incident" happened.

In my opinion it showed a lack of taste and class.

26. Yes. I've joked about it, but some are deadly serious.
Much of the criticism is not so much Justin's keeping a breast, as:
1) the media attention given the event;
2) the media attention given the half-time show; and
3) the reshowing and reshowing of the event.

I didn't see it, since I was boycotting the SB and CBS -- and still doing the latter -- over the MovingOn ad. And guess what -- I don't miss seeing it.

34. No
I was watching the Super Bowl with my Irish born husband and one of his friends. All we did was laugh at the boob shot. They grew up in Ireland and one of the weekly things for them do was to check out Rupert Murdoch's News of the World for the topless girls. The next day they both said "Yanks get their knickers in a twist over nothing". The both of them are much more offended by Chimpy and his antics than by anything that was on the Super Bowl.

39. I was VERY offended by the halftime show
That half time act in general was dull and unentertaining treating football founds around the world as typical American Dingbats who have no taste in musical performance.

Plus what really offended me is the fact that CBS would NOT air the MoveOn commericial which I found offending to those of us who still believe in our constitutional freedom of speech.

I think that covers it all!!!
