I'd rather eat dog barf. At least there'd be meat in it - and it would probably taste better.

on edit: But I do like couscous

12. Oh yeah.
Tommy's restaurant in Cleveland also spells it "Homos," to the mirth of many (and no doubt the puzzlement of more than a few, as well).

10. Humus is dirt.
At least that's what pops into my head when I see the word "humus":

hu·mus ( P ) Pronunciation Key (hyms)
n. A brown or black organic substance consisting of partially or wholly decayed vegetable or animal matter that provides nutrients for plants and increases the ability of soil to retain water.

HuMMus is delicious.

11. Isn't "humus" dirt?
hu·mus
A brown or black organic substance consisting of partially or wholly decayed vegetable or animal matter that provides nutrients for plants and increases the ability of soil to retain water.

(OK, so it's also a smooth thick mixture of mashed chickpeas, tahini, oil, lemon juice, and garlic, used especially as a dip for pita.)

14. Don't forget the pronunciation.
I've heard hyoo-mus and humm-iss. It's actually pronounced hoo-muss, with the 'oo' sounded like the 'oo' in 'roof'.

16. No proper nouns
allowed in Scrabble. And doesn't the tile have "Qu" on it?

It's hard to figure out how to spell Arabic words in English. I was supposed to make my great-grandma's recipes into a cookbook once, but I couldn't decide how to spell anything. So somebody else had to do it. :)
