My choice would be

"The Grapes of Wrath".

That movie caused a huge stir when it was first released, with many theaters refusing to even show it and the author suffered at great lengths because of the movies production. I believe historically speaking, this book probably had more impact than any other.

How about you?

5. "The Verdict" should be considered
Paul Newman, an alcoholic lawyer takes on the Catholic Church and one of its hospitals in a malpractice suit and wins big time. The difference between conservative "values" and liberal "values" was quite clear.

6. All the President's Men
certainly aspires to be a major work of liberal writing/journalism. For those of us living at the time of Watergate, it captures a large amount of the spirit of free speech and the first amendment rights.
