Illegal Immigrant's Poem
My sister just sent me this little ditty.

Illegal Immigrant's Poem

I cross ocean, poor and broke,
Take bus, see employment folk.

Nice man treat me good in there,
Say I need to see welfare.

Welfare say, "You come no more,
We send cash right to your door."

Welfare checks, they make you wealthy,
Medicaid, it keep you healthy!

By and by, I got plenty money,
Thanks to you, American dummy.

Write to friends in Motherland,
Tell them 'come fast as you can.'

They come in turbans and Ford trucks,
I buy big house with welfare bucks

They come here, we live together,
More welfare checks, it gets better!

Fourteen families, they moving in,
But neighbor's patience wearing thin.

Finally, American moves away,
Now I buy his house, and then I say,

"Find more aliens for house to rent."
And in the yard I put a tent.

Send for family they just trash,
But they, too, draw the welfare cash!

Everything is very good,
And soon we own the neighborhood.

We have hobby -- it's called breeding,
Welfare pay for baby feeding.

Kids need dentist? Wife need pills?
We get free! We got no bills!

American crazy! He pay all year,
To keep welfare running here.

6. Well, it's more like it's cynical irony I think - - I've heard it up here
.
.

and it's true in a way

It is easier for immigrants to get training, education and "benefits" than many of us who were born and raised here.

Way back in the 70's I asked my father(was in the Provincial Government) about "rights" in this respect,

and he told me that those most likely to get "extra" rights were female, better if pregnant, and even better yet if an "immigrant"

not QUITE the way he put it, tryna be politically "correct' here

and is even truer today

a single white male (especially if you're over 30) is at the bottom of the list for training, job opportunities and especially welfare.

Sad, but true

8. send her a copy of Woody Guthries Deportee
Some of us are illegal, and some are not wanted,
Our work contract's out and we have to move on;
Six hundred miles to that Mexican border,
They chase us like outlaws, like rustlers, like thieves.

We died in your hills, we died in your deserts,
We died in your valleys and died on your plains.
We died 'neath your trees and we died in your bushes,
Both sides of the river, we died just the same.

From "Deportee" by Woody Guthrie

11. Who are all these friends, all scattered like dry leaves?
The parts that realy touch me about this song ...

The sky plane caught fire over Los Gatos Canyon,
A fireball of lightning, and shook all our hills,
Who are all these friends, all scattered like dry leaves?
The radio says, "They are just deportees"

Is this the best way we can grow our big orchards?
Is this the best way we can grow our good fruit?
To fall like dry leaves to rot on my topsoil
And be called by no name except "deportees"?

13. This one pisses me off every time I see it
Immigrants, both legal and illegal, are keeping this country running. They're doing the shit work no one else wants to do, and often risking death to do it. This kind of xenophobia really chaps my ass; I'm only 3rd-generation American myself and this is the same kind of shit my great-grandparents faced when they came from Galway.

Sickening, just sickening. Nothing like having compassion for one's fellow human beings.
