I snorted heroin a couple times in college. Actually while travelling in Europe--took a year off school. Once you got past the nausea, it was great. But I haven't taken any drugs in years and years. Except booze.

I don't know that there is anything "hard" about it, but it was quite the ride; in a good way.

Salvia Divinorum was both hard and harsh. Not particularly fun, but very interesting.

The drug that has endangered me the most was a simple normal dosage of Robitussin. The Dextromethorphan in it apparently puts me into a two or three day panic attack. I know some people use DMX in large quantities to induce a hallucinagenic high, but trust me, if most people reacted to it the way I do, it would NOT be in danger of being abused (or even used, for that matter).

...and up bright and early the next morning at 7am, feeling great. I guess I don't get hangovers? I've only been really drunk three times in my life, but neither wound up with any sort of hangover.

I found out ecstasy is MDMA--we had that shit in the '70's, and here I though my only experience with that was my son ODing on a combo of ecstasy and Vit K. (He went temporarily blind and had an out of body experience, never did either drug again)

I've seen more damage than benefits from recreational drug use, but then I work on a transplant unit and in long term care before that and took care of a lot of junkies all abscessed up or brain dead drunk driving victims. In the case of my son, thank all the Gods all he does is drink a little and smoke pot. Not fun visiting your kid in the hospital.


One of the sadder stories I know is that of a young girl-- very early twenties who went into fulminate liver failure because of excessive vicodin use (It's the tylenol part that trashes your liver) She had a positive tox for something else as well, and therefore was untranplantable because of "polysubstance abuse" A new liver would have been her only shot a life. She didn't get it.

I work long hours on my feet and am constantly taking pain relievers. Many years back (when I worked in another field) I learned that my patients with liver damage could no longer take acet. When I learned why I completely gave it up (taking it only when I was pregnant-about the only "safe" pain reliever on the list for pregnancy.)

I now take good old asa. (aspirin) It works pretty fast, though I do have problems with bruising on occasion.

The best legal drug I did was rcenetly...hubby and I never take meds for anything hardly because we are rarely ill. HOWEVER, I had to depart with my thyroid late last summer. When I woke up, I eventually puked in recovery (of course they told me they are amazing gods and no way would I get sick because the delivery method is so much better than in the 80's and blah de blah I knew they were full of shit I was going to be sick and WAS). I fought it as long as I could (still could not even open the eyes, I was still bundled in the warm blankies, moaning "I am going to be sick"...however, I cannot honestly swear to god I said it out loud..eventually I turned my head sideways and :puke:

SO, instead of giving me something in the IV BEFORE I got sick, they then gave me some kind of cocktail that made me nearly sit up straight...it included anti nausea meds, dilaudid and morphine...holy crap it nearly blew the top of my head off instantly,I said "what the hell was THAT?" The fell promptly back to sleep.

knowingly or unknowingly at the time. Strange thing is that I was never worried about becoming addicted to any of them and could easily put them down at any time. It was always the legal I was afraid of becoming addicted too-and over the counter at that.

Truthfully, if I ever became an addict it would probably be to something like Nyquil. I buy it every year during the cold and flu season and every year I realize how easy it would be for me to take large doses of it every night.

I started doing recreational drugs when I was 14 and I'm in my 50s now. I've used heroin and some other opiates, plain ol' cocaine, etc. Smoked pot almost daily for 35 years (with occasional breaks, sometimes for a couple of years). LOTS of acid-- LSD was my drug of choice for decades. I can personally account for half a dozen full sheets and nearly as many bottles of liquid acid over a ten year period that included grad school and my most productive research years after grad school, plus lots more during the two decades or so prior to that. Shrooms and mescaline back in the day-- stuff they used to call "synthetic mesc"-- who knows what it really was. Angel dust (PCP) for a while, long time ago. That was pretty nasty, really. I mean, hell of a buzz, but it's a fine line between flyin' and pukin'.

The hardest, IMO, was speed. Classic amphetamines, like black beauties, dexies, etc. I was a real speed freak for a few years during my misspent youth, but had some psychotic episodes during long intervals when speed was cheaper on the street than food (well, I could get PAID in speed in those days) so I walked away from that and never looked back. Luckily I was well over the crank years before cheap meth came along-- I just don't go there at all. I ENJOY my drugs, and most tweakers I know don't seem to be having much fun.

These days I mostly just smoke pot and enjoy the occasional fine scotch or tequila. I was never a big drinker except for a ten year or so stretch when I lived with an alcoholic, and I just slipped into drinking with her without really noticing it happening. Later I stopped, or at least went back to my personal alcohol use comfort zone, which is pretty narrow. Booze makes me feel nasty if I'm not real careful with it, so abusing it isn't really much of a temptation. I lost touch with all of my old acid connections six or seven years ago-- we're all dispersed around the country now-- and I don't really have the stamina for something that demanding these days anyway, so I don't mourn the loss. And who knows? Maybe a sheet or two will fall from the sky again some day.
