I remember watching SOTU 1996 with Bill Clinton enumerating the many accomplishments of the previous year. I think that is the only SOTU I've watched from beginning to end. Even by his third SOTU, Clinton was known as a remarkably gifted speaker. I was working for a clothing retailer at the time, and the manager wheeled a TV onto the sales floor so the staff could watch it. I remember feeling a burst of civic pride that our government to come together and, in Clinton's own words, use what was right with America to fix what was wrong with America.

Those days are gone. But maybe President Obama can bring them back...

but I do. we change the channel on the radio in the car when his voice comes on the air (we listen to NPR mostly, so go to mindless music when they have his voice on the show)
