1. They are exploiting their 15 minutes

and gambling that it will be more

but

It all reminds me of the Jerry Springer show (which I won't watch) where people do and say anything just to be on TV.

Like the movie "To Die For" where Nicole Kidman's character (paraphrased) says "your no one unless you are on TV"

2. I've never watched one

And never intend to. Come on: how "real" can people act when they know everything they do and say is being recorded for the titillation of millions?

Now, if a number of Republican politicians offered to eat live bugs on television, that I would pay to see! I'd undoubtedly have to rent the DVD since I don't have cable and my television goes obsolete next year, but I'd do it. I also expect it would be a big hit on YouTube.

3. With the AI audition shows, most of them are clowns

it is a circus atmosphere and they are willing to make fools of themselves in order to be entertaining and/or get attention. I don't enjoy watching clowns in the circus, either, but I don't see this as much different.

With shows like Survivor, it's partly for the money and partly because the "contestants" are seeking fame.

With talent based shows like Project Runway, I don't see it as much different than watching a sporting event. There is a competition and the winners go on and the losers are eliminated.
