The Oscar nominations are out
I was sort of surprised that "Sweeney Todd" wasn't nominated for Best Picture. Ah, well.

And I sincerely hope that they will NOT have a telecast if the writers strike is still on. I will NOT watch it if they do.

9. Okay here are my predictions.
Atonement will win BP (although it as truly dreadful, don't flame me). It reminds me of the other boring BP winner, "The English Patient". Thank god they didn't nominate lightweight Kiera Knightly. Daniel Day Lewis will win as best actor. The amazing Cate B will win as best supporting actress and Julie Christie has a lock and well she should. I have no idea who will get Best supporting actor as I thought they were all ho hum.

Okay Don Flame suit.

8. snubbed for what
Sorry, Atonement is nothing more that English Patient reduxed - the gals nominated deserved way more than she did

I've seen 3 of the movies with the nominated actresses (Elizabeth, La Vie En Rose and Away from Her) and I think all 3 very much deserved the nomination (I think it's down to Julie Christie and that french chick who did La Vie En Rose). Laura Linney has had a long history of some great work and I've read nothing but raves about that girl from Juno.

But my money is on Julie Christie - she absolutely blew me away in the movie "Away from Her". It was poignantly heartbreaking and Christie absolutely rocked that role. I think this is her year!

Atonement was dreadful, wasn't it? It'll win.

15. Julie Christie was wonderful.
Too bad her co-star, Gordon Pinset, wasn't nominated as well.

Best Actress is going to be a tough category. Marion Cotillard was absolutely superb in "La Vie En Rose". It will be between her and Julie Christie.

17. I agree, but I think that girl from Juno could be the dark horse
I highly doubt that Cate Blanchett will win it; she'll get an Oscar but for Best Supporting since this sequel wasn't as well reviewed as the original ("Elizabeth"). And Laura Linney is one of those pereninnel nominees since she always puts out quality work each year but I don't think this movie is enough to give her a win.

So it really is between Christie and Cotilard but I keep thinking that Oscars sometimes will shock us with a totally fresh face (ie Jennifer Hudson, who I still think did NOT deserve the Oscar) and that would be Ellen Page

13. Win for what - it barely got any of the big nominations
Sure it got best picture but only pulled in one acting nomination and a screenplay nomination going up against some very competitive titles including two nominated for best movie (I still think "Away From Her" will win it).

I think Atonement will be overlooked.

And no - I haven't seen it. Everytime I see the trailer it screams "English Patient" and it automatically repulses me. And for the 2-3 people I've known who have seen it said it was a waste of time.

I just love him. Actor, musician, photographer, poet and LIBERAL! If he's funny, that may make him the hottest man alive.

4. Wow. I've seen three of the five Best Picture nominees
It's been years since that was the case.

Juno, No Country and Michael Clayton. And I may very well see the other two before the award.

OF the three I've seen, No Country is the best. I really liked Juno, but I don't see it as Best Picture.

for the rings films. Ian McCellan, and most particularly, Sean Astin as best supporting. And of course, Viggo.

32. I think that was the Academy's way of saying there was a FEW Oscars that went elsewhere...
beside to LOTR that year. I was quite pleased though, as that series was one of my faves, but I'm guessing that the Academy, especially the acting peers were kind of intimidated by the whole nomination sweep that the LOTR series had for everything else.

I thought one of the biggest jilts though, was the adapted screenplay award that went to "A Beautiful Mind", rather than to "Fellowship of the Ring". I still think that the LOTR's scripts were some of the most ambitious and best adaptations that were done in film, and they deserved recognition for that.

I felt that "A Beautiful Mind" took way too many liberties with "creative license" in distorting what was represented as a "true story" that was adapted from Sylvia Nasar's book. Actually Sylvia Nasar went to the same high school I went to out in Turkey back in the 60's. Too bad they didn't get her to help out more to keep it more true to life.

gotten anything! I agree with you on Beautiful Mind. I get particularly incensed when revisionist history is used in film.

25. That movie made me very uncomfortable
The scene where he rapes his wife, and then she decides to stay with him in the end.

I've seen too many movies like that in recent years - "Lust, Caution" was another one - the woman gets raped, and then later falls for the guy.

31. Tommy Lee Jones wasn't a surprise for me!
I predicted after seeing Valley of Elah that he'd get a nomination! That was one great flick that serves as a warning on PTSD that this war presents us by Susan Sarandon. Everyone here should see it!

7. No love for Kate Bush, either
She was mentioned as a possible nominee for "Lyra" from The Golden Compass.

I don't think Hollywood has much love at the moment for anyone whose surname is "Bush." Just a theory I'm working on.

14. Sicko got nominated for Best Documentary!
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 10:24 AM by JonathanChance
And now for some of the other categories

http://www.oscars.com/nominees/

Well, we know who's gonna win best animated feature.

Oh, god no...

Norbit actually got nominated for an Oscar. Please, for all that is holy, let Pirates of the Carribean win Best Makeup. I don't want the people responsible for that piece of shit to ever claim that they put together an Oscar winning film. ON EDIT: Oh, crap. One of the guys responsible for the Makeup on Norbit has a legacy of won Best Makeup for An American Werewolf in London in 1981, Harry and the Hendersons in '87, Ed Wood in '94, Nutty Professor in '96, Men in Balck in '97 and Grinch in 2000. The biggest shitburger of 2007 may end up being able to call itself an Oscar winning film. :puke:

Best Visuals could go either way. It's Pirates vs Transformers. This might incite more flamewars in the geek community since the infamous Joel vs Mike debates in the days of USENET.

I need to go see that movie. I keep hearing good things about it, my only problem is I hate going to movie theaters anymore and prefer waiting to rent.
