My roommate just bought a white-noise generator
Edited on Mon Jan-21-08 09:53 PM by ThomCat
because he hates to hear the sound of anyone else nearby.

Problem #1: He lives in my apartment. I'm the quiet one. I can't be any more quiet.

Problem #2: The volume on those things isn't supposed to go up to 11.

1. You need your own white noise generator to drown out the sound of his.

23. I thought that's how they're supposed to work!
You don't put it near the source of the noise; you put it near the person who is bothered by the noise. We have one in our room and it works great covering up some of my husband's snoring. But we would keep it in here even if the noise that was bothering us was outside of the room.

Just so you know, you do get used to it after awhile. We can hardly sleep without ours and even take it with us when we travel, which really helps in hotel rooms.

26. I could easily get used to it if he turned it down.
:)

Getting a white noise generator was actually a good idea. It's just his choice of volume that's got me concerned.

I hope I can get him to turn it down without a conflict, and I hope I do get used to it.

30. The directions that came with ours said to start off low and gradually
increase the volume as needed so you can get used to it. Maybe you can convince him to do that. Good luck!

How can someone who is so sensitive to every little sound I make be so damned loud? He plays the tv loudly, talks loudly on the phone, and now this.

4. No, she moved out.
:(

I'd much rather listen to thumping all night than static that's supposed to be a waterfall.

My last roommate broke up with her boyfriend, dropped out of grad school, and moved back home very suddenly.

This guy is my new roommate, and I'm starting to second-guess my decision.

36. My roommate got tossed in the slammer
until June the 1st. We get along so good, that I am waiting for him to get out and I'm paying full rent. I am keeping his room exactly the way he left it. I just don't want to risk getting stuck with someone that I don't get along with.

38. If he's a good roommate then I'd do the same.
When one of my dearest friends, Tracey was living here she had the misfortune to be working in the World Trade Center on 9/11. She was amazingly fortunate to be one of the 3 survivors from Cantor Fitzgerald. She went home to her family to try to recover. I held her room for her for a long time, until it became obvious that her injuries were permanent and she wasn't going to be able to come back.

I hope he's not in jail for anything violent or serious, and I hope he can recover/rebuild after he gets out.

I'm not quite ready for a noise war through. He's basically a nice guy, but he definitely has OCD. So i will adapt, and I'll talk to him, and we'll work this out. (Takes a deep breath. Om...)

22. fan, basically
when I'm sleeping in a really quiet house it's a hell of a time falling asleep. if there's not any sound, it's like my ears turn up the volume trying to hear something, but only get the tone.

47. I've got ear ringing too
sucks, doesn't it? I use a fan to sleep and I've also got some white noise on my ipod and sometimes will use both simultaneously. I find it helps to have one between me and the window to block window noises and then another to block noises from outside the door and, of course, both to mask the stupid ringing in my ears. I can't sleep without the white noise now.

18. a 'good' one actually sounds like the sounds it is supposed to mimic.
I have a Sharper Image one, and the 'surf' button sounds like the surf. No additional buzz or hum. It's several years old, so I don't know what is available now, but I would 'think' they've only gotten better.

46. I was going to say that!
When I was in high school a friend, her boyfriend, and I accompanied another friend into his house one night when his parents had gone to bed. The hallway was filled with the sound from the 'static' between radio stations. I had never heard of falling asleep to such a loud sound.
My favorite falling asleep sound is a chorus of spring peepers.
