3. I'm studying to be an ExEd teacher.
I'm going to try to have the kids grade as much as possible themselves, by trading papers. I think it will help them all review, also.

Of course, there's always the stuff they're not allowed to mess with, like some of the midterms and finals.

I spend most of my day at school (I'm a teacher assisstant) grading, while the teacher does
instruction, IEPs, endless other meetings, reading assessment and email.

I feel your pain. I guess you have it ALL to do. :hi:

6. Exercise Education?

Definitely helpful all around to have them review each other. We have them do that with their big end-of-quarter writeup.

But yeah, not so much with the exams... bummer.

I'm just whining -- i really don't have it too bad. There are 4 TAs, so we each teach a lab section and have about 30-40 exams to grade.

:hi:

8. You might need to be concerned with privacy procedures...
don't get yourself in trouble.

Arguably, student's grades aren't supposed to be made public to anyone according to FERPA.

10. yup
the days of trading and grading are over for many districts

also, have the studnets use crayons or something if you trade and grade because the kids like to change grades

12. another reason for not doing it...
when I was in HS, we all marked off just a couple of questions, and "surprisingly" everyone got high 90s on every homework assignment that was traded, unless you got Rachel, then you knew you were screwed.

13. It's done all the time here in Brevard County, FL, but I need to
check into that. It's a valid point.

Erasures would be subject to inquiry, and grading a good buddy's paper could be prevented by how they're handed out.

Thanks for the heads up, though.

16. My district forbids trading and grading
I give all of my students red pens and have them correct their own answers. I also tell them that I will survey at random. If any answers are not corrected, I take double the number of points off.

The students get immediate feedback and still keep their privacy.

There just isn't any way to make it enjoyable, as far as I'm concerned. Well, except maybe off-loading it onto TAs....

I'm teaching general ecology this semester too, with more or less the same sort of students (ours tend to be mostly 3rd or 4th year students). It's one of my most fun courses, but the grading is HORRENDOUS. I give long, involved exams-- most people take several days to complete them, and there are three each semester. It usually takes a couple of TAs and me two weeks to grade them, with each of us spending 20 hrs+ to complete them. Then there are the research project reports in lab, and a host of short assignments. Grading it all is incredibly tedious.

Last spring we had a midterm exam just before spring break, and for a variety of reasons I got stuck with the whole stack. I had a trip to the Saline Valley planned for the break, so I took them along. Luckily it was so hot that staying under shelter was preferable most days. Here's how I spent the ENTIRE WEEK (grading exams):

You are mean! :P

Actually, you must be very nice to do all that grading -- most of the time when i teach, the prof doesn't do any grading at all.

I guess you probably didn't get much fieldwork done though! :hi:

I probably would have been receptive to sexual favors from co-eds for grades... so, it's probably a good thing I never went into teaching.

35. Once a long time ago, in a different world for me....I did give everyone an A
It was an odd class. Freshmen, very motivated, Honors EARLY WORLD HISTORY. First marking period in November. 1983,, The system I had set up for grading was too easy for them. I had not anticipated such a bright class...........
,,,..All 18 students in the room got an A..It didn't last. But a magic moment in a long career of giving Fs
