-11°F, and falling
The sky is crystal-clear, though. The starscape is AWESOME. And a full moon on the white snow.

It's a toasty 70°F in my apartment. Mmmm... central heat.

How the rest of the Lounge doing?

7. Heating oil is $3/gallon
I can blow through over 100 gallons a month. I have rooms sealed off and even put plastic curtains to cover doorways so the heat from some mobile radiators can heat the living room and my bedroom.

The oil company only does 150 gallon minimums, so it's about $480 (with tax) just to have the oil truck pull into my driveway. :-(

I'm trying to make my last 130 gallons last through February. Sucks being middle-class and rather broke...

I'm moving this summer unless the landlord fixes the chimney and puts in a wood burner/pellet stove/corn stove as an alternate heat source.

When I moved here, heating oil was $1.59/gallon.

12. It's okay
it could be worse. I could have no roof over my head at all.

Heated mattress pads are heaven. So are warm mist vaporizors. They help heat the air.

:)

Lots of layers and keep moving. If it gets too cold, I find a coffee shop with free wifi and surf and read.

Oh, and I make too much to qualify for heating assistance.

20. sorry you're so cold there--here's a couple more suggestions
weatherstripping doors and windows
throw rugs against the bottom of the doors to block the draft
ceiling fan running in reverse to blow the warm air up and then down the walls
throw rugs on the floor

when i had short hair in the winter i'd wear a headwarmer/headband around the house over my ears to keep them warm

sitting in a warm/hot tub warms me up too.

when my nose gets cold? i put my hand over it for awhile (they should make a nosewarmer that straps around your ears.)

I've already done most of what you suggested. I've also got plastic (shrinking 3M stuff) on all the windows, towels under the doors of the unused bedrooms (the cats HATE it...). The ceiling fan is a good idea but I rent and there are none.

Last winter I fell on the ice and broke my arm. I actually went to bed with gloves on because my hands were so cold.

I put air cleaners behind the radiators to move the warm air around too. :)

or, a grandma in Iowa does, anyway...
http://www.originaludderbalm.com/gear/nosewarmers.php
or, if you knit, google "knit nose warmer" and you'll find links to various instructions.

25. I was in Junction the last couple of days
It was COLD. Maybe 20's when we got up. We had no ice-scraper for the car (being from South Texas) so people were using credit cards to scrape the ice off!

And then I came home and it's only about 40 degrees now.

48. No doubt, kris - once it hits -35, the scenery doesn't change much.
Except for ice fog and for some reason (c'mon DU scientists) the aurora always look brighter and are more active when it's somewhat cold. By cold, though, I may not mean the same thing as other DU'ers cold. We don't get braggin' rights in Fairbanks till it hits at least 45 below and stays there for at least several days! :hi:

It rained yesterday evening for about 10 minutes.

IN JANUARY?

NO ICE FOG???

TOO FOGGY/CLOUDY FOR THE NORTHERN LIGHTS???
Yep. Shot from somewhere off the Steese Highway last year:

Supposed to snow some more this week, we hope, because the Yukon Quest starts the first Saturday in February - the puppies need the snow to cushion and curl up in!

Hope all you mid-States can crawl out from under and have a chance to enjoy your weather - hell, you've ALL got "braggin' rights" now! :toast:

51. Working! Now I'm pretty sick and the docs can't figure it out -
so I'm once again job hunting (my current employer really didn't like a 3-week absence). No bigs, we'll deal with it. I HATE job hunting in mid-winter, though!

Can't wait to hear from/see you guys during the Ice Art festival. If you don't mind sleeping bags on the floor and cats sleeping on your head, you know you're welcome to stay here at the house. If it keeps staying this warm, though, the ice quality will badly deteriorate. Jeez, I want WINTER, not some wimpy idea of it!

Met Lance Mackey and his lovely wife Di a few weeks ago - you guys ought to come up for the start of the Quest (here in Fbks this year) - there are absolutely going to be some terrific shots there! On the river at Cushman and 1st Avenue.......... and it's really fun. The little, bitty very old Catholic church is right at the starting line!

If you're going to be here over a weekend, we could all go to Chena Hot Springs for a night - the aurora are usually fabulous there this time of year, and you could get some shots of their new Ice Hotel!

I'll find out when the Championships are and email you with details. Wow, it'll beg great to see you both (not that I can see you with all them camera thingys hanging around your neck, and the scarves/balaclavas, bear-claw gloves and bunny boots.................. :pals:

35. I remember living in northern NY. Snow has a special squeak
when one walks over it and the temperature's a balmy -20 degrees F. But, you know, the coldest temps up there do not match our moderately-chilly weather down here in Arkansas for discomfort. It's a "wetter cold" down here. That penetrates to the bone in a heartbeat.
