Who here's boycotting Valentine's Day???
(Rant coming)

I am. I fucking HATE IT. Last year, I had the one chance in my life to truly celebrate it with a girl whom I thought was going to continue a very special relationship with me, only to see her dump me the Monday afterwards.

Valentine's Day is nothing but a marketing ploy created by the greeting card companies in cahoots with happily married and soon-to-be-married couples who feel they need to piss off the rest of the single people in the world who are either too shy to seriously commit to a relationship in constant fear of rejection (like me), or who choose on their own fruition to not be in a relationship.

What fun is Valentine's Day when you're all alone??? Well, I say boycott it if you feel no need to celebrate it if the weight of the relationship world has crashed onto your shoulders.

It doesn't matter if you're straight or gay. If you're single and shy or just choose not to be in a relationship, what purpose does that holiday serve??? NOTHING, that's what. I fucking HATE Valentine's Day. It reminds me of the worst day in my life. I don't think I could ever celebrate that god-forsaken holiday. I'm just going to wind up bitter and alone.

I'm sorry I had to rant, it's just that this time of year really pisses the fucking hell out of me.

1. Not really- I actually have a date on that day...
For my sister's wedding. And it is just an old friend that lives near the town they are being married in. SO it was a date of convenience. Otherwise...I'd be boycotting the daylights outta it!

2. I know what you mean. Been there, done that for YEARS
Matter of fact, it used to be non-stop depression and bitterness for me from Thanksgiving all the way through to my birthday on March 17. All those holidays and nobody to speak of to share them with. It took me a long time to understand that marketing ploys are all they really are nowadays. If you can find some reason - ANY REASON - to be content within yourself, then just ignore the holidays and treat them like just another day.

3. I was thinking ahead
when I insisted that we schedule our wedding on February 14, 1998. My argument that it was on a Saturday and too good to pass up. Consequently, however, every year I only need one (impressive) gift for Val's Day and Wedding Anniversary combined. Plus, I'll never forget our anniversary.

4. I hear you.
I say fuck it. For a long time the first reason you mentioned applied to me but now I am just getting sick of even caring. Besides I wonder if this is supposed to be vindication for them because people always tell me "you're better off single.

6. Agreed
Most holidays are corporately created, or perverted so much by corporations that the original meaning has been destroyed (right, Santa Claus, you false idol you?)

Corporations are definitely against the Christian ethics; they pervert everything for greed. Including Christ's birth and his Rise from the tomb (Easter, right all you chocolate Easter Bunnies? :eyes: ).

I hope they read this. :D

7. She speaks no English, I speak no Spanish
I'm flying down to Cancun to interview with my best friend for a job at his company and he's setting me up with his sister-in-law for a Valentine's Day double-date.

She doesn't speak a word of English and I don't know a word of Spanish, so we actually have a better conversation than I've had on *any* date in the past three years!

8. Not I
I'll be in Costa Rica. But if I wasn't, I'd take my gf to the pet store to pet puppies (it works everytime).

9. Go have some fun with some friends.
Keep the tv and radio off or minimized. Turn the day into another kind of celebration.

I'm married to a romantic man, but the reality is, he'll be gone for two weeks, and even if he wasn't, we're raising two kids. I don't like getting the roses because they're expensive and they just die or give me allergy attacks. Hallmark and the rest can stuff it, IMO. And you're right: it is a big marketing scam for the jewelers, etc. Who needs the guilt a "holiday" creates?

10. I hate it so much...
that I've not only boycotted Valentine's, I've also boycotted girlfriends for two years just so I can avoid the whole issue (sarcasm in the upright and locked position).
