Why do people work when they really aren't able??
My co-worker will be out AGAIN tomorrow for another "family" thing. She schedules appointments during the work day and leaves the office for every minor thing. Oh, her "kids" are well past the age of needing her 24/7. The oldest is 24.

I'm sick of covering for her sorry ass. I was in all week last week while I was sick and never even left early. I think I need a mental health day. Hey, why not tomorrow? ;)

Can't speak for your colleague, but speaking as the working mother of an eight year old, sometimes family shit happens.

4. I know, I have teens and have been working since they were little.
She purposely schedules things during work hours and this latest emergency has nothing to do with her kids.

6. This is different than 'not being able to work.'
This can veer pretty quickly into hating-on-working-parents territory if we don't watch our terms carefully.

It sounds like this particular person has a time management and/or priorities problem. It doesn't have to do with her 'inability' to work because she has a family. Not so long ago women weren't hired at all because they'd just get married and have kids.
