Hawk Attacks Chiahuahua in Bryant Park (NYC)
NEW YORK, 8:21 a.m. EDT August 6, 2003 - It was like a Wild Kingdom fight for survival in Manhattan's Bryant Park. A hawk attacked a Chihuahua dog Tuesday. --snip--

We all knew it was only a matter of time, I mean it was BOUND to happen sooner or later...

2. Food
I guess in absence of rabbits, chihuahua's are a good enough substitue for a hawk.

4. mmm, mexican food
was it wearing a sweater? and would that make it a burrito?

and who can really tell the difference between a chihuaha and a rat from ten feet away, let alone 500?

5. I had a chihuahua...
He was the bravest, sweetest, most loyal dog in the world. I know there will be lots of jokes making fun of chihuahua's size limitations on this thread, but there is NO dog with a bigger heart.

Not to mention that I bet it fought that hawk like hell. Chihuahuas are extremely territorial and nasty little fighters.

9. Those little dogs
Are great companion and are one of the longest lived breeds. My landlord had one for 23 1/2 years!

14. My baby Carlton used to sleep under the covers with me every night...
He was the sweetest animal I have ever owned. Such a cuddler! When I was going through a bad time and I cried or whatever, he wouldn't leave my side. He'd press so hard against me it was like he was trying to meld himself to me. He gave my tiny puppy kisses and put his little paws on my shoulders to hug me.

Little dogs in general are longer-lived than larger dogs. The stress on the heart, lungs, and joints of being big just wears large dogs out faster. So it makes sense that the smallest breed (chihuahuas) would be the longest-lived as well.

30. I grew up with chihuahuas
The pedigreed one was a "teacup" - 2-1/2 pounds full grown. Her son, who was an "oopsie" (mama got out when she was in heat) was only 4-1/2 pounds full grown, but thought he was a Rottweiler. He would tackle ANY other male dog. Most were too surprised by the attacks to retaliate, although an Afghan nearly killed him once. They have the instincts of all dogs, and if treated like dogs (instead of spoiled little babies), they can be nice pets.

I'll bet he gave the hawk a run for its money, unless the hawk broke his neck with the first strike (which is what raptors usually do).

It's perfectly natural for hawks, coyotes, owls, and whatnot to take domestic pets when they can, but it's also natural for a human to grieve for their beloved pet when attacked.

What's funny is that my favorite breeds are all either the miniatures or the super-giants like English Mastiffs.

6. I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.
As we humans encroach more and more onto the hunting grounds of hawks and other birds of prey, they will see whatever food source is available.

I bet that hawk will rue the day it picked up a chihuahua though. It's probably thinking, "SHUT UP already...yap, yap, yap..." ;-)

15. True
But the invasion of man has forced many species not just to be left to wander in and causing problems but to actually adapt to modern city life. The famous Red-tailed Hawk nesting in New York on buidings along Central Park, Coyotes, Raccoons to mention a few.

21. The hawks were actually intentionally re-introduced into the city
if I recall correctly. The one in the story definitely was.

23. Wow. That's interesting...
All I see here is hawks sitting on street lights or soaring looking for some unfortunate animal to munch on. They just look really out of place on anything man-made.

24. There's actually only a small number of hawks in the city
They're very territorial and have pretty large territories. I beleive there's a couple (a mating pair) that claim all of Central Park that I see often. It's really cool, I think, to look up and see this beautiful, graceful, large bird circling and then swooping...

8. It all natural
Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 10:27 AM by StClone
Cars kill millions of cats and dogs annually, but one hawk attacks a little dog and Rush and FAUX will air it pushing the dangers of our natural world still to be subjugated.

As for little dogs, Golden Eagles will try to take them. I've even seen them dive at Wild Turkey.

Great Horned Owls may take cats. Pound for pound the silent "Flying Tiger" Great Horned Owl is one of the deadliest of predators though a cat is one tough meal. People wearing fur hats or getting too close to a nest have been savaged by them these owls. I have seen stories of Great Horned Owls killing people when a talon penetrates the skull or eye! True or not it adds to their menacing wild appeal.

12. Hey, hawks gotta eat, too. I can't believe people intervened.
Just out of safety, I wouldn't have gotten involved,

but more improtantly in the natural order of things, if the hawk wants to eat it, it's up to the dog not to be eaten, not up to me. And if the dog wants to kill the hawk, it's up to the hawk not to be killed, not up to me.

Who am I to deny an animal its dinner? (unless it's trying to eat me, or something of mine, or another person, of course).

16. A hawk tried to pick up a full-grown cat once near a restaurant
where my dad lives. The cat dropped back to the ground from pretty high up, with a whooole bunch of feathers. :)

Cripes, bad enough trying to just HOLD a cat that doesn't want to be held. Can't imagine grabbing oneentirely against its will and carrying it into the sky...

Must have been a hell of a fight!

18. I'm glad the little guy survived....I have two chis and am always on
the watch when they are in the backyard for short spells. We have coyotes and hawks and ground squirrels around here, not to mention roadrunners!

I also have a min pin that had wandered for 8 months before I finally sat out in the garage with food at 5:30 AM for two weeks. He's turned into the sweetest, most lovable dog of the bunch. His name is Slicker.

The original chi is Toro and he's a pain in the ass because he was spoiled. The one we then adopted, Tico, was abandoned twice and is adorable, but has anal gland problems which turn him into a tiger....we're taking care of that within the next couple of weeks. Once his behind is straightened out, he should be his usual sweet self all the time!

These two will bark and act tough but....are basically chicken.

31. One cold snowy winter day...
I took pity on the starlings that I ordinarily detest, as they raid my suet feeder. I tossed some stale bread crumbs out on the front walk for them, and watched from the door. As I watched, I felt I'd done something decent, especially since I really don't care for the boogers.

Suddenly, a hawk flew down, grabbed one in her beak and snapped its neck in a flash, and flew off again.

I felt no guilt. The hawk was hungry too.
