Can they DO this???
Just got a call from the bank that holds my mortgage. Said I needed to come in to a local branch and talk with them. I asked if there was a problem with my mortgage. They said no, but I had to come in and be "IDd" to comply with the patriot act. I've had this mortgage for years, and they "IDd" the hell out of me when I qualified. I think this smells like BS...has anyone else had to do this?

1. Here's a link...
http://www.gcglaw.com/resources/financial/identification.html

At first blush, it appears they can. And yes, it sucks. :grr:

3. I did see a sign in my bank about some new Patriot Act identification thing
I didn't read it closely and maybe I'm hallucinating this part but I want to think there's fingerprinting involved. I guess under the Patriot Act they can do whatever the fuck they want to do. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if soon we all have to go in for microchips and GPS implants.

4. Thanks for the info. Thank God for GWB and the patriot act!
I feel so much safer. Can you imagine what would happen if a terrorist had a mortgage?

6. It's "Know Your Customer" stuff for banks
Never give someone bank info. over the phone -- there are so many "phishing" scams these days involving people purporting to be from your bank.

9. I never give out anything over the phone unless I initiate the call
I took down the person's name and the bank address and told them I would get to it if I felt like it.

7. I am highly skeptical.
They have all the information they need on your loan documents. Chances are they do not even hold the mortgage anymore but are just servicing it. I don't know how they could be scamming you but if they start trying to sell you something during your visit, walk out.

8. Get it in writing.
Demand to speak to the bank manager. I would want that conversation recorded, too, but it can't be out of line to insist that they send you a letter with their so-called "requirements."

11. Tell them no, then see if they cancel your mortgage. I bet they don't.
