1. None of the above...
The worst part about growing older is the distance from the idealism we're born with.

13. Yeah, I thought I'd be wise too!
...and when I was young I hated how frustrated I got when I had to wait for anything too long. I figured I'd mellow out and be all nirvana-ish as the years went by, but I'm more impatient than ever now! I have an excuse: I'm too old for this, more than half my life is over, why the hell am I waiting for stupid shit and stupid people, I've earned the privilege of getting what I want when I want it....total entitlement now!

So I just had my 53rd b'day and my 22 year old cousin was visiting me so I ran him all around San Francisco, made him climb Russian Hill since the cable car line was so long, and I was so proud of myself that I could keep up with the child. But once home, after relaxing for a couple hours, I stood up and it felt like I'd been kicked in 10 different places by a very angry elephant. Cousin, OTOH, was dancing around after a 2 minute rest! It really brought home the biggest difference of all: the amount of time it takes me to recover from freakin' ANYTHING!!

From my youth, I miss everything physical. Aside from that recovery time, I miss my bounce-back metabolism, my keen eyesight, my ability to grasp a concept immediately, instead of having it explained to me 5 million times! But I don't miss the emotional roller-coaster rides, not the insecurity that made me a cutting, sarcastic bitch. So it's a trade-off, I guess!

61. When you stop swimming is my guess!
When Jack LaLanne turned 90 a few years ago, the press all gathered around and asked him the cliche questions like how he stayed so healthy, et al. They also asked him if humans did only one exercise, what's the best one to stay fit?

He said, swimming, hands down! So you're not gonna feel "the nasty stuff" for awhile if you keep that up!

Me, I'm just neurotic about my health, so any sign that I might be deteriating is gonna freak me out. I don't care how long I live, I just wanna have all my faculties as long as possible.

So my advice to anyone who wants to stave off the aging demons is to find an exercise you love to do. For me, it's cycling and running and I'm convinced it's been my saving grace. My sister, who's a year older, doesn't take care of her health, she's diabetic and takes more prescription meds than our 84 year old father. Trust me, you thirtysomethings, you don't wanna end up like that!

Oh, I started getting hair on my ears 2 years ago, and I used to know a guy who went bald at 22. :( He was psycho as he wanted me to help him blow up his ex-GF's home, but nobody's perfect... (okay, that was technically 14 years ago and he was a loonie...)

41. You mentioned in another thread a possible mis-diagnosis
The psoriasis on the ankles is a strong indication of psoriatic arthritis- which is what I suffer from.

Have a talk with an arthritis doctor. You may find yourself going in another direction.

45. My GP thought that at one time too...
all the blood tests came back negative and the meds they had me try did nothing. :(

When I saw the rheumatologist, he found no trace of arthritis except one possible/arguable sign in my left ankle (which is nowhere near as bad in terms of the psoriasis as the right one.)

It makes sense in some ways, but when the day was said and done, the docs ruled it out. :(

and then dumping all their Mom-based fears/resentments on you.

I find it's impossible to have any sort of relationship with some younger people, because they are incapable of seeing me as a person and not a stand-in for their mother. And people have LOTS of issues with their mothers (as do I).

I've considered getting a tattoo across my forehead reading: Not your fucking mother!

30. Matthew Arnold said it:
Growing Old

What is it to grow old?
Is it to lose the glory of the form,
The lustre of the eye?
Is it for beauty to forego her wreath?
Yes, but not for this alone.

Is it to feel our strength -
Not our bloom only, but our strength -decay?
Is it to feel each limb
Grow stiffer, every function less exact,
Each nerve more weakly strung?

Yes, this, and more! but not,
Ah, 'tis not what in youth we dreamed 'twould be!
'Tis not to have our life
Mellowed and softened as with sunset-glow,
A golden day's decline!

'Tis not to see the world
As from a height, with rapt prophetic eyes,
And heart profoundly stirred;
And weep, and feel the fulness of the past,
The years that are no more!

It is to spend long days
And not once feel that we were ever young.
It is to add, immured
In the hot prison of the present, month
To month with weary pain.

It is to suffer this,
And feel but half, and feebly, what we feel:
Deep in our hidden heart
Festers the dull remembrance of a change,
But no emotion -none.

It is -last stage of all -
When we are frozen up within, and quite
The phantom of ourselves,
To hear the world applaud the hollow ghost
Which blamed the living man.

Matthew Arnold

38. Other: Loing my singing voice. I loved expressing myself in song.
Listening to my neice's high school rendition of the Hallalujah Chorus brought back memories of singing the Soprano I part of the Messiah back in the day.

Now I sound like a frog. The high notes are not screechy or anything I could work on; they simply are not there, there is no sound at all.

I think I can really understand how Julie Andrews felt when surgery ruined her voice...

60. I couldn't vote
But that won't stop me from putting in my two cents worth.

When I was in my late-20s I was at a restaurant and saw a table of older people peering over their reading glasses at the menu and having the most wonderful time with each other. They were laughing and high-spirited and enjoying each other to the maximum. I said that someday I wanted to be like that.

I don't think of growing old as losing something; it's just a metamorphosis. We lose, we gain; we always lost and we always gained, even when in our prime. The difference is that while we "lose" (read "change")in physical areas, we gain in mental areas (perspective, knowledge, etc.)

So that's why I don't feel bad about getting older. I don't see anything about it as a loss, just as a change.

And just for the record, I don't think death is the end, either, so I don't fear it. I think it's a metamorphosis and we take up existence in another dimension. And don't let anybody tell you otherwise--there's plenty of proof for anyone who cares to pursue it.

Cher
