5. I showed my son how to fold it back at a very early age, and how to keep the area clean...
on a routine basis. He's been very diligent ever since, understands the issues quite well now at 18yrs of age, and thankfully has no problems not that he would.

6. I'd be a little nervous about doing that to Jesus.
You don't want to piss off an all powerful god. Good thing he's a forgiving kind of guy.

8. They were devout Jews, so that was what God wanted in
that situation. I don't think He would have gotten angry.

11. It's a Roman Catholic Holiday.

The Circumcision of Our Lord
<>
"The old liturgy celebrated three feasts in one. The first was that which the old Roman sacramentaries called "the octave of the Lord," and indeed the greater part of the Mass was of the octave of Christmas with many extracts from the Masses of Christmas. Various portions of the Mass and Office celebrated the divine maternity of Mary. The third feast was that of the Circumcision which has been celebrated since the sixth century. Eight days after His birth Christ underwent, like all the Jews, this rite enjoined on Abraham by God as a pledge of his faith, and He received the name of Jesus.

When Our Lord submitted to the cut in His flesh at the Circumcision he began His work as Redeemer. He commenced that shedding of Blood which would reach its highest point of generosity in the Passion and Death.

In giving to Abraham the law of circumcision God bestowed on him his new name ? Abraham. With the Jews henceforward the giving of a name had a spiritual significance; like circumcision it meant that the person belonged to the people of God. The bestowal of the name of Jesus has an even loftier significance: it is an assertion of His mission as Savior of the world."

15. What is with you and the drug thing?
January 1st is a Holy Day of Obligation for Roman Catholics to celebrate the circumcision of Jesus (et al, if you read el's reply). It has nothing to do with celebrating the New Year.

16. The early Catholic Church condemned the festivities as paganism.
http://wilstar.com/holidays/newyear.htm

ANCIENT NEW YEARS
The celebration of the new year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon (actually the first visible cresent) after the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring).

The beginning of spring is a logical time to start a new year. After all, it is the season of rebirth, of planting new crops, and of blossoming. January 1, on the other hand, has no astronomical nor agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary.

The Babylonian new year celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year's Eve festivities pale in comparison.

The Romans continued to observe the new year in late March, but their calendar was continually tampered with by various emperors so that the calendar soon became out of synchronization with the sun.

In order to set the calendar right, the Roman senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the new year. But tampering continued until Julius Caesar, in 46 BC, established what has come to be known as the Julian Calendar. It again established January 1 as the new year. But in order to synchronize the calendar with the sun, Caesar had to let the previous year drag on for 445 days.

THE CHURCH'S VIEW OF NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS
Although in the first centuries AD the Romans continued celebrating the new year, the early Catholic Church condemned the festivities as paganism.

But as Christianity became more widespread, the early church began having its own religious observances concurrently with many of the pagan celebrations, and New Year's Day was no different. New Years is still observed as the Feast of Christ's Circumcision by some denominations.

During the Middle Ages, the Church remained opposed to celebrating New Years. January 1 has been celebrated as a holiday by Western nations for only about the past 400 years.

28. Exactly--it's a Holy Day of Obligation, and I well
remember the 5 p.m. Mass on December 31st (5p.m. the day before always counted for the next day...)

It was usually filled with those on the way to NYE parties and drunkfests--observant Catholics who knew there was no way in Hell they were making it in the next day.....

19. I got snipped at the age of 8 days old myself
No Jewish bloodline, that I know of. Apparently my mom bought into the "cleanliness" argument, though she regretted doing so when she heard my obvious protests coming from some other room. Not sure why my dad bought into it, considering he wasn't altered himself. Which of course led to my confusion as a small child, not understanding why daddy's looked so much different than my own.

And when the circumstances were explained, apparently my reaction was "why did you let them ruin me"? though I don't remember ever making such a statement.

I don't know how common the practice is anymore, but I told myself if I ever had a son, that I wouldn't put him through that.
