Any one from Minneapolis?
I'm looking at real estate there; what's your opinion of the cool areas?
What ARE the cool areas?

1. Bryn Mawr is pretty neat!
Bryn Mawr is in North Minneapolis, but it is a very safe neighborhood. The homes are bungalow style, built between 1900 and the 1950s.

Another area that is cool is Linden Hills, but because of its proximity to both Lake Harriet and Lake Calhoun, it may be pricey.

7. I lived in Bryn Mawr for 8 years
it's a great area, but it has gotten VERY expensive in the past several years. A smallish '40s era 2-3 BR is about $300,000 these days.

Bryn Mawr is also the home to Margaret Anderson Kelliher, the speaker of the MN state legislature.

4. I am.
Depends on what you mean by "cool." The Uptown area (Hennepin & Lake) is generally considered cool. Other coolish areas are near Loring Park, or the Lake Harriet/Lake of the Isles area (a bit expensive). If you get too near the northwest side of the airport it's a bit noisy, but there are some nice houses, a little cheaper on account of the low-flying airplanes. If you are interested in fixer-uppers there are some interesting old houses on the east side of 35W but parts of that area can be a little dicey (crack houses and such here and there). The suburbs are pretty much like suburbs everywhere else -- expensive McMansions and Applebees.

14. Olive Garden *originated* in Minneapolis
or nearby; it was originally a division of General Mills.

Sorry!

6. in North Mpls near Brooklyn Center
Humboldt Ave has been revitalized

Also the South Metro - Richfield and Bloomington (west of the Mall of America)

Everyone is moving to the crappy suburbs. Stay away from Edina (aka EveryDay I Need Attention)

8. You may want to try St Paul, too
Lots of good real estate, and tends to be a lot cheaper, too.

10. It's not in Minneapolis and it's a smaller town
but for its size I've always liked Northfield. Very nice small town.

11. The coolest areas are also the most expensive, unfortunately
I like Linden Hills (where I live in an apartment that inexplicably costs 50% less than the ones around it), Prospect Park (a residential enclave near the University of Minnesota), Northeast (one of the few affordable/safe areas these days), and parts of St. Paul, including Highland Park.

In the suburbs, Hopkins has a real downtown, as does Edina, but the poster above is right: it's snooty.

12. It depends on what you want.
There's commercial Uptown poser-cool, then there are nice, walkable neighborhoods (St. Paul, especially) and there are areas still a bit rough around the edges with artist loft space.

Do you like "action" or quiet?
