Anyone going to make black eyed peas and greens on New Year's?
You know, for good luck in the coming year?

If so, do you have any favorite recipes?

2. Where I come from (guess)
They had the tradition of First-Footing - Scotland too.

A First-Footer was a tall dark-haired man (well i was only 14/16)
who would knock on yer door after mid might bearing a lump of coal (warmth) a piece of shortbread (health) and a tot of whiskey (cheerfulness). It took me about an hour each New Year's.

Made alot of tips though.

Then I got a girlfriend and my life went downhill for the ensuing 45 years.

4. Absolutely
I just cook the Black Eyed Peas in water and a couple coarsely chopped onions and a little bacon until they start to get a little creamy. I used to add Ham Hock and Fat Back, but I prefer the cleaner taste these days. This usually becomes Hoppin' John with some white rice, we usually eat brown rice, but at New Years we have some long grain Basmati to go with the peas.

For Greens, I used to do collards, but have been making Kale for the last 10 years or so and prefer the kale with some bacon.

I also cook a Ham - the only time each year I do so.

My wife is a New Yorker, she had no idea about this sort of stuff until she met me, now, she relishes that great southern cooking I learned from my Grandma. Her whole family are fiends for cornbread - but I can't seem to get it sneaked into Seder.......and hickory smoked Matzoh is just too hard to find.

5. I'll make Hoppin John
But will skip the greens. Hoppin' John and biscuits are a New Years Day tradition with us; strang for a family from Michigan with strong Celtic roots.

6. It's pork and sauerkraut in PA!
I just put it all in the oven and bake it. Serve with mashed potatoes and green beans. It's traditional in this part of PA.

9. That's our tradition as well here in southwest Ohio
The exact same meal. I used to not like sauerkraut, but I would force myself to take at least one bite for luck. Now days I dig right in, though. Good stuff!

7. Nope. My tradition is Chinese food.
In years past, it was the only place open on major holidays.

8. Having them tonight
but I'd never heard of the tradition of having them on New Year's day until this morning.

We just happened to decide to order out at our favorite BBQ place for New Year's eve.

12. Blackeyed peas, glazed ham, cornbread
I use the same glaze on ham and turkey. I mix equal parts cranberry sauce and peach preserves.

I never cared for Hoppin ohn or any of the pickled peas, just black eyed peas w/ bacon or ham hock

14. No more hoppin' john for me
last year was the last year for hoppin' john in my house. I wasn't hung over, even, but I had to ralph after I ate my own cooking.. that was a first.

my afternoon was like this: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

and not only that, it didn't make me rich...the reason to eat those peas, from what I always heard. it was like a "there's no santa claus" moment. we had blackened tilapia last night and that's my substitute for that ragin' cajun john.

16. Of course!
I do mine like some of the others...with a smoked ham hock and some seasonings.

A pork tenderloin and some cornbread will join the greens and peas. YUM!

17. Black-eye peas, mashed potatoes, cornbread, collard greens-. . .
and I use turkey ham lo! these last 20 years instead of salt pork. My husband is from Syracuse, New York and he'd never heard of this fine southern meal -- now, he can't get enough of it!
