Tony Bennett vs. Frank Sinatra
Which is the greatest singer of all time?

I posit that Frank couldn't even carry Tony's microphone. Tony is the GREATEST OF ALL TIME!

1. Tough call, but I gotta go with Frank.
His music was better overall, and it suited his voice well.

Tony's still going strong though, I believe.

4. With all due respect, Frank was a shitty singer.
I mean, really, what a shitty voice. I'm not sayin' he wasn't cool, just a shitty voiced singer. Nice timing though.

Bake lives in Mississippi and there is no illegal drug use or homosexual activity in the magnolia state.

I'll give Elton John circa early 70's as best male vocalist honorable mention.

27. I think its very important
to let one and all know that we are awash in conservative values here and any drug use or homosexuality done in Mississippi has some sort of purpose one can justify in the old testament (if read backwards)

I'd give a slight nod to Sinatra if only because there would be less of a chance of getting whacked for not voting for him.

8. you don't get it, Frank's voice was incredible and smooth
until it was damaged, but the amazing thing is that it was this later voice that everyone remembers and appreciates because that's when he began interpreting songs and that was what has made him so famous and influential.

Sinatra is more than the sound of his voice, but is also how he used it. He arguably did his best singing when his voice was of lower quality and when his voice was of higher quality he didn't sing as remarkably.

How ridiculous your statement is. I mean, by your standard, Louis Armstrong had a terrible voice, even Ella Fitzgerald really wasn't operatic or anything. It just shows that you are not judging singing comprehensively --it is more than the sound of one's voice, but how they use it and what they use it to do.

Sinatra changed music with his voice and that so many do what he did, that so many do it *unknowingly* should make you realize the man was great and arguably the greatest.

14. Hell, I know he's great! I'd put him right there at No. 2.
Just for the "stylings." For being the quintessential lounge singer.

It's so easy to go with Frank because that's the Accepted Wisdom. I always thought Tony never got the credit he was due.

5. Both are steller in their own right
Sinatra's style and interpretation probably has had greater influence than Bennett's. Also, Sinatra really had two careers, one as a refined-sounding crooner with a Bing Crosby, smooth type of voice and later with the voice we all recognize so much better and the one that influenced every singer --I don't care who they are.

Secondly, Sinatra was an excellent actor in one of the greatest movies of all time, The Manchurian Candidate and he played an incredibly challenging role in that movie.

I really think to rank either of them above or below each other is missing the point of their greatness.

12. I agree with you
Tony Bennett makes it all look so easy, doesn't he?

I've been fortunate enough to see him live twice. One of the more interesting things he does in smaller halls is singing "Fly Me To The Moon" sans microphone.

The man still has it, and always will. Sinatra can't touch him.

19. well not really
Sinatra in his earlier years had a better voice than Tony Bennett ever did and I would say Sinatra was the better singer as well.

That said, I don't really like to say Bennett is #2, but I really can't handle Sinatra being #2.

And Ella Fitzgerald belongs with these guys as a #1.

23. "Sure Sinatra couldn't sing, but he was a great singer!"

You people crack me up.

And yes, you're right... he couldn't sing. He couldn't sing to save his soul; all the "stylings" in the world can't redeem a mediocre voice. He had a lot of cachet, though, I'll give the boy that. Cachet and connections, baby.

(runs off being chased by angry mob of Sinatra freaks)

33. Hey now! No need to get upset.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I can totally see where tone-deaf people would like him.

Ha ha. Kidding. Okay, I'll never say he was a bad singer, just that he wasn't "great." Or really even "good," in my opinion. Why? Okay. His voice always strikes me as being very flat. I don't think I've ever once heard him manage a vibrato, not even a subtle one. Whenever vibrato or any other vocal nuance is indicated, he always slides his notes instead. Wassup wit dat?!? Eh - no nuance, no intimacy with the song... no passion. So, that's my specific complaint. It's all about the vocal passion for me. He didn't have any. In my opinion.

31. I can't pick between two towering giants
When I was young, I didn't like Frank Sinatra very much but I loved Tony Bennett, who seemed a little hipper to me. I was visiting my aunt on the West Coast in the 60s when "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" just came out and was being played every hour on the radio. But now I've come to recognize the incredible mastery of both.
