I think it's a hell of a deal, and it's on my CompUSA card because they are being liquidated (yeah, I know, we still have to pay the bill, but it's still a hell of a deal!)

Specs here:

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=cat3&product_code=347751

Intel Viiv Technology, Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600, 2.4GHz, 3GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive, Windows Vista Home Premium

Naturally, I plan to junk Vista for XP Pro.

1. No, not at all
Being a Desktop, you really do not need CompUSA service. Most parts are user replaceable.

3. Probably not, but I prefer homebuilding - here are my concerns:

1. Good luck in finding XP drivers for that model; I'd grab them all before reformatting...

2. What's your current PC? I upgraded my current box with a new mobo, Q6600 CPU, and 4GB RAM for $600. And was able to ramp the processor up to 3GHz (many easily o/c it to 3.6GHz, but that's ridiculous...)
.

4. an ancient Pentium D
that is on its last legs. Had this system for about 3 years.

Second handed. Abused by a smoker.

5. I have an Acer Aspire 1640, and it's the best notebook computer I've ever owned.

I've had it for about two years and I love it. The only thing I would change is the means of resetting it when the very rare "freeze" occurs; there's no reset button, so it has to be unplugged from the power source, flipped upside and the battery quickly disconnected and reconnected. Other than than, it's a wonderful product.

7. I've got a 9500 series Acer...
and it's been quite reliable for a sub-$1000 laptop.

8. Assuming the thing works properly, you might not even need to junk Beasta.
3 gigs of RAM should give you far fewer problems
than those poor bastards with the 512mb specials.

I'd give it a test period, myself.

9. You could always put Linux on it
And not bother with M$ at all.

10. Well, I might recycle the other computer into a pure Linux
machine.

I just need to find an xwindow client that'll work for Winblows.
