anyone "do" freerice.org?
I have a niece and a nephew who are juniors in high school and beginning the whole SAT prep process. During the conversations on this topic, one of the parents described a website set up by a parent who ran a humanitarian aid website - who was trying to help his son learn words for the verbal section of the SAT. He came up with the idea of a site that played a vocabularly game, and that donates grains of rice (20 grains per number of words answered correctly) - paid for (the rice, that is) by the advertisements on the site.

So of course we had to find the site. My niece who has avoided the "studying vocab for the test" thing was the first to begin trying the game. She was on the site for an hour (and doing pretty well) - and really got into the idea that by practicing/applying her word knowledge, she was helping contribute food to those in need. What a great concept.

Anyone else playing/doing the freerice.org thing?

1. Yes, I got to level 42 and couldn't get any higher without falling instantly.

2. I hit 45 - and get knocked down to 39, rise back up and fall back down.
but its rather addictive. I should just shut the window and do it again later (and stop just after I hit a high and then fall-down once), but I can't... I just seem to be a glutton for punishment.

3. I've done it a time or two.
But then, I like exercising my vocabulary. :hi:

4. WooHoo!
what a GREAT treat for the holiday! I love it when we cross paths!

I just found it tonight, and can not draw myself to close the window and pull away from it. Am at 1880 grains of rice, telling myself that it isn't that I am temporarily hooked, it is just that I want to get to 2000 grains of rice donated. :D

:hi: and :loveya:

5. I had to stop at 1000 grains one night.
I could barely keep my eyes open.

It is good to see you. I hope you had a Merry Christmas.

6. I just quit at 2000.
Should I admit that I played it that long?

Always great to see you, hope all is well and that life is providing you with many unexpected pleasant events/moments. :hi:

8. Busy as always
but I am starting to see (professionally) a big pay off in results of years of hard work. That has been more gratifying than I could have imagined it would be. The folks that I serve are really starting to soar. Would like to work less on the one hand, but on the other, when I see things finally paying off - I can't imagine working anyless. Thankfully energy is gotten in the process.

But for a life outside of work? Hah! Maybe someday...

9. That is GREAT! I'm so glad you're starting to see results.
You cannot put a pricetag on that kind joy.

Your life outside work will come. It tends to blindside you. It did me.

13. Thanks...
I am content - and when things are stable enough that I don't need to work my tail off (as in things are somewhat institutionalized), then there will be time for other things, and if some of those other things include a social life - all for the good; if not, I have really come to enjoy my space in life and contentment works just fine for me!

11. Yes, I do that every once in a while, but it sure takes a long time to
make a bowl of rice that way.

15. I kept wondering and thinking
that even one-thousand grains of rice, probably doesn't amount to much. But, if a whole lot of us get at that level at the same time... maybe that begins to add up?

16. I work with some teens at the age of prepping for the SAT, thinking of
trying to set up some sort of competition between them - give them more practice - and maybe rack some numbers up that provide someone in the world a few meals. Seems like a no-lose proposition.

Btw :hi: and great to see you!

17. It's addictive but I can't get past level 45.
I want so bad to make it to fifty but I just don't know any of the dang words at that level!

18. My first try - I hit 45 twice - but then fell back to 39.
and climbed back up - just to be slapped back down.

20. Me too. I've settled down to around 42 now.
I just want to see the words at level 50! I bet they're made-up...

21. Damn! How do you get above 48? I got...
"sternutation" but that still didn't help.

3420 grains of rice, level 47 (on the way back to 48) and trying to remember what "amaurosis" means.

(I guessed right-- it's blindness.)

22. I made it to 50 a couple of times
But got knocked back down after a few more words (it helps that a lot of the harder words are medical terms). Eventually, they do repeat, so you can boost your score.

That bloody website's addictive.

24. Ah yes, but I've been a nurse for over 30 years
A lot of those weird-looking words are medical. If I get a run of medical terms, it makes my score look deceptively high.
