non-public documents and photographs (as well as public ones) of the cause of that crash (one of my clients makes wire and cable used on the 747, though (luckily for them) not on that specific airplane), and I worked with them on writing their input to the various standards bodies (DSCC, ANSI, the FAA, ARINC, SAE, IEEE, and so on).

I hate to have to be the one to break the news to you, but here it is: What happened was EXACTLY what the newspapers said it was. The wrong kind of wire (having a jacket (insulation) with insufficient abrasion resistance, routed improperly, and therefore subject to more abrasion than the insulation could withstand.

Here's the equation: electrical wire minus insulation in one spot plus contact with ground (part of the airframe) equals a spark; a spark plus fuel vapors from a partially-filled fuel tank equals an explosion.

Flame away, but this is the truth of the matter.
