why did dog poop stop turning white?

Back in the day, dog poop would turn white after a couple of days.

It doesn't do that anymore.

Why not?

One of the selling points for Iams dog foods was a "low ash content" ...ash being defined as ‘the incombustible inorganic residue remaining after incineration; generally the mineral content of the food.’

Maybe the stuff turning white was the undigestible ash content that used to be in dog food (especially cheap dog food before the fancy "boutique" food they get today)...

14. That makes a lotta sense. Started making my dog's food when the recalls started

90 Pound Hound gets meat (cooked please, modern slaughter houses are NOT the natural environment and butchered meat is not a clean kill!) cooked brown rice, lentils, split peas, fresh peas, eggs, tomato, calcium supplement, parsley, sometimes applesauce. It's a good mix with protein to carb ratios from a vet's recipes. He has done really well on it, but the poops are different.

We noticed it turns almost black now when it get dried. Takes a couple days. Havocdad knows it's convenient to scoop now by the color. The birds like it cuz the dark stuff sucks up the sunshine and melts snow around it, making it a good place for the birds to hang out early in the morning.

I can't believe I'm on DU, discussing dog dung on Christmas. I SO need to move to a town with more going on for an old heathen like me. :eyes:

It was something I remember seeing on occasion but not all that often.

I always thought it was something lacking in the dog's diet.

But, yeah I haven't seen that in ages. But then don't come across random dog shit much at all anymore.

People seem to be better at both keeping their dogs in and cleaning up their anal leavings than they ever used to be.

Something about the climate? :shrug: Before I left home, I lived in Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma and observed white dog poop in those states, but I've never seen it in the other states and countries where I've lived since I was 20. :shrug:
