1. I'm Xian, I like Xmas songs, but I am already tired of them. (Hubby's been playing them in the car
Thanksgiving and whenever I ask for something different I get called Scrooge and Grinch.) x(

2. I like classical and traditional Christmas music, but not
shlocky stuff that's basically about snow.

I mean, in Minnesota, "Jingle Bells" is equally appropriate for January and February.

3. I was raised fiercely Roman Catholic
and although I am an atheist, I have a soft spot for traditional Christmas music. I like the sentiment of it, I guess, and the memories of my youth...

13. I definitely agree on "Santa Baby",
my least favorite Xmas song of all time. I kind of enjoy "The Singing Dogs", though. haha

7. "All seated on the Ground" by Connie Willis
http://www.asimovs.com/_issue_0712/allseated.shtml

Is kinda funny, aliens land and are completely unresponsive until they hear some xmas carols (turns out to be a harmony thing not exclusive to xmas songs) but they appear to follow the instructions of the lyrics literally. And as the characters try and illicit more reaction and conversation with the aliens they struggle to find 'safe' lyrics...stuff that doesn't deal with killing, damning, etc...

They have a rather difficult time of it. :)

BTW: I'm atheist, I generally like the tunes and when I'm in a good mood I enjoy listening to some xmas songs.

9. Liberal Catholic here.
I love Christmas and Advent music, the older, the better. Bring on the French, German, English, and other carols! I've got an obscene supply of Christmas CDs and tapes, too -- everything from the Baltimore Consort to the first Very Special Christmas.

But ask me about radio stations that play "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" the day after Halloween and you get a different answer. Oh, how I hate that. I also hate the shop till you drop mind-set, all accompanied by ads with Christmas music, beginning in November.

10. I like some of them, in small doses.
If I hear "I'll be Home for Christmas" five times in three hours again though, you'll all be glad for the waiting period on gun purchases. :grr:

11. When I was a kid
John Hancock insurance used to give out these neat little books (more pamphlets. I guess, than anything big) with all the Christmas carols in them, and we used to sing with the words in front of us.

Some songs are just beautiful, like "Silent Night" and "Oh, Holy Night" and some, like "Away in a Manger," are just perfect for children to sing.

I might have shed my Catholic upbringing, but many of the songs are just too nostalgic to me to remove them from the holiday season. I also find that too many of the non-religious carol fare is mainly for children, and there are very few ("Silver Bells" and "White Christmas," for example) for the adults.

There are some songs which I really don't care for--"Santa Baby" and "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer"--which really grate on my nerves. I suppose they're meant mainly for the kids, but "Santa Baby" is probably my least favorite holiday song.

On the other hand, I don't hear "Do They Know It's Christmas" often enough--it's a very sobering anthem for the season, and too many in the U.S. are so commercially obsessed that we need to remind ourselves that we're not the only country in the world, and that too many are being killed, starved and dying from horrible conditions elsewhere on planet Earth.

12. I'm agnostic, but I like a lot of Christmas songs
What's funny is that I tend to like the religious ones- "O' Holy Night", "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear", "What Child Is This?", etc.- more than the secular ones. There are the ones that tend to get overplayed every Xmas season that I get sick of, but I seem to be able to avoid them more successfully as I've gotten older.

16. I love Christmas songs, and I'm a Christian, but
a lot of Chrismas songs aren't religious in nature, they're just about wintertime. "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!" "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" "Jingle Bells" "Baby, It's Cold Outside" "Winter Wonderland" "Sleigh Ride," etc. But Christmas songs are important to me more on a nostalgic level than on a religious one.
