Saw I AM LEGEND last night. I know it's just a movie, but (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)
Edited on Mon Dec-17-07 02:01 PM by raccoon
How could he still have electricity after 3 years?

How could he still have running water after 3 years?

How could he still have a car that ran (OK, maybe he got lucky and the car just didn't break down.)--and gas--after 3 years?

Given that he had the car, why would he drive around like a bat out of torment, knowing that if he were injured, there would be no one to give him medical attention?

Edited to add: That said, I did like the movie.

1. Answers
He's in NYC - No body around.

To live in, he'd have selected a defensible building with a generator. A lot of building in NY & esp Manhattan have cisterns on the roof.

All the gas is free, he just has to make sure his source is secure. All the cars are free. When one breaks down he just & gets another one.

Getting away might more difficult & dangerous - remember they destroyed all the bridges & tunnels. In order to leave he'd have to find a place to hole up each night.

2. " All the cars are free." But car batteries would go dead from disuse.

Cisterns, that's a possibility.

How does he get gas from the gas pumps? No electricity.

"remember they destroyed all the bridges & tunnels." yeah, I remember. One reason I went was to see the apocalyptic NYC they'd created.

9. Thanks. I missed that, somehow.

Seems like to me the car batteries would go dead, though, after a few weeks or months.

5. Driving crazy
A little bit of a death wish--subconscious suicidal tendency.

Note: I should say I haven't seen the movie, but that's the impression I got from seeing the opening crazy-driving scene from The Omega Man.

8. Probably
It's been a while since I've seen the movie. But I do recall also picking up some subtext, beyond the plot point, that a small part of him was tired of surviving alone.

11. No, he was just chasing the deer.
They did a good job of showing him as a man on the edge.

10. He was upstaged by the dog.
It was okay. But I was glad when the dog got killed off. Frankly it seemed like not very much happened during the course of the whole film. I don't think that the villains, if you can call them that, were very well developed. The whole thing was treated a lot more intelligently in that less intelligent film, Omega Man.

Of course the Vincent Price movie that Omega Man was based on was much better. Still, I'll give the writer/director credit for one thing. When the woman finally showed up, I was certain that Will was about to get laid. She's a hot chick in a muscle shirt and they're the last man and woman on earth. Certainly they gotta end up locking lips, at least. But surprisingly the film didn't go there.

14. That was so SPOILER
sad when the dog died. Reminded me of OLD YELLER.

In the book OLD YELLER, the family had to shoot him right after he fought the rabid wolf, which certainly made more sense than keeping him to see if he'd contracted rabies, and running the risk of him biting one of the family.

12. How did the manequin get moved?
That was my only question.. did the vamps do that?

I liked it too. Will Smith is a swiss army knife of actors. Robots, aliens, vampires..

15. Right. That was the only one that... (SPERLER ALERT)
Edited on Mon Dec-17-07 04:12 PM by Bucky
... Will had set up outside the video store. It was set up outside the library by the zombs as a trap. Will Smith had said they were no longer human, but I think the point of that, along with the zomb's loyalty to the captured zombette, was to show that they were changed and feral, but not less than rational beings.

16. That makes sense
but wasn't it the mannequin that was behind the counter? Which means that if the vamps are rational, then they must've known about Will's trips to the vid store? I think this was a deliberate hole by the writers.. which I'm cool with. :)

17. I think he was the manniquin outside the store who he greeted first
That was the most effective scene, by the way. I kept expecting those manniquins to move.

Altho I liked watching the movie, it wasn't much of a movie. The CGI zombs were totally cartoonish. I never believed them to be people.

18. they had all night to find stuff moved around by him
so it's not unreasonable that they knew about the video store. They just started doing something about it after he took the last test zombie. That dog made me want a German shepherd. And we all know how I feel about dogs.
