Today's GeoCRAZY Question: Ancestry in the US!
We all know that our country is a melting pot, but there are still a few places in the country that stand out for unusual reason due to the heritage of the people living there. In fact, according to the 2000 census, there are only:

*2 counties in the US where the ancestral majority is Portugese
*1 county in the US where the ancestral majority is Chinese
*1 county in the US where the ancestral majority is Dominican
*1 county in the US where the ancestral majority is French Canadian (not French)
*1 county in the US where the ancestral majority is Polish

Where are they? (I will give you hints if you get the state right.)

BONUS: Which is the only state in the country that doesn't have a SINGLE county where a majority of people claim their ancestry as European?

3. Yup, the bonus was pretty easy this time.
According to my sources:

Hawaii County (the big island) and Honolulu County (Oahu) have a Japanese majority.
Kauai County and Maui County have a Filipino majority.
And Kalawao County, the tiny strip of land on Moloka'i that used to be a Leper Colony has a native Hawaiian majority.

No other county in the US has any of these demographics.

2. Vague guesses
At least one of the places with Portuguese ancestry is in Massachusetts

The place with French Canadian ancestry is in Maine.

The place with Polish ancestry is in or near Chicago or Milwaukee.

The place where no county has a white majority is Hawaii.

4. You're right about Hawaii, and correct on all others but one.
Massachusetts--check.

Maine--check.

But surprsingly. the county with Polish ancestry is actually nowhere near either Chicago or Milwaukee. Those are two pretty solidly German (or in Chicagoland's case, African American) areas.

5. My next guess would be Pennsylvania, then
due to the Polish National Shrine at Doylestown.
