If the story sounds familiar, it should. Richard Matheson's apocalyptic tale was previously filmed in 1964 as "The Last Man on Earth" (with Vincent Price) and in 1971 as "The Omega Man" (with Charlton Heston).

"Legend" easily outclasses the earlier films, although director Francis Lawrence and screenwriters Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman eventually turn away from creepy, thought-provoking suspense and allow "Legend" to become an overwrought action flick with chases, explosions and monsters that prove to be considerably scarier while they're lurking in the shadows than they are when they slip into the light.
