She's a die-hard Republican, so I'm only somewhat sympathetic. However, she is a single mom with two kids. Her son is old enough to help, but again, this all comes down to available time when you're racing around with two children.

I'm not sure how to feel about this.

That's a good idea I think.

I don't care what people do with their yard otherwise but sidewalks full of leaves are dangerous. I've almost slipped on leaves a few times and now when I come to a patch of sidewalk that's never been cleared I take baby steps til I get past it.
There's a house I go by almost every day and the sidewalk is dangerous. NOTHING against whoever lives there, they just don't realize, or maybe they've been out of town for months, but it was worse yesterday because it'd just rained and the rotten leaves are getting slippery. And I couldn't avoid it because it's next to a busy road and I'd rather fall on the sidewalk than go in traffic. That's the only problem with leaves/sidewalks, the danger to gimps :hi:

4. I had yuppie neighbors calling the City all the time a few years ago.

I guess we're just not white enough for the yuppie neighbors with their cushy jobs and perfect houses and perfect children.

Some guy in a white City car with "NEIGHBORHOOD PROTECTION" written on the side would come out and hassle me. What a creepy name.

One time, I had "sticks in my yard". I didn't know that having sticks in your yard was illegal. I couldn't find it anywhere in the city statutes online.

Another time, I had "poison ivy on my back fence". How would the people next door be able to find out what was growing on my back fence? I told the City inspector guy I didn't know what poison ivy looked like, and he admitted he didn't either. :wtf:

Another time they griped about the non-working car in the driveway, but it was NOT disassembled. Had to shove it in the garage to hide it.

Another time I lit a tiki torch in the back yard, away from the house, and the folks across the street saw it and called the fire department. I did not know that lighting a tiki torch in your own backyard was illegal. I put it out immediately.

The wife marched up the driveway once (she's about six feet tall and intimidating) and started yelling at us for washing our OWN car on our OWN grass, our OWN property, next to our fence, so the water would drain into the grass instead of standing on the driveway. She said "It makes the neighborhood LOOK BAD."

I'm waiting for them to bust us for driving old cars (Older than five years is probably repulsive to them).

I think they're mad because we live in an older subdivision that does NOT have those ridiculous deed restrictions & neighborhood nazis in homeowners' associations, like what color you can paint your house, but they wish they lived in one of those so they could lord it over us.



They did this all the time.

6. I had that happen to me once.

I shoveled the walk. It contributed to making me late to work - the weather was the rest of the problem. I couldn't work a full day because it took almost 3 hours to get to work instead of the usual one hours. I had to leave early so I could back home, and it took hours to get back. I had to pay a ticket because during the time I was at work, the snow accumulated enough that my sidewalk was unpassable.

I don't really understand what people are supposed to do in that situation. The cost of the gas plus the ticket plus not being able to work a full shift can wipe out a person's whole salary for the day. Not everyone is in a position to take a day without pay so we can shovel a sidewalk.

11. I almost fainted the other day

at the bottom of our driveway are 4 mailboxes. In the past I have always shoveled out all of the mailboxes.

about 4 years ago a family of knuckledraggers moved in next door, their mailbox is on the far end of the group.

we had an especially heavy snowfall, and with the roadplows coming through the pile of snow along the edge of the driveways/mailboxes was especially deep, heavy and densly packed. the knuckledragger had his snowblower out clearing his driveway. (because of the condition of our dirt/stone driveway we have to use shovels to clear ours)

ennywhoo - we asked him to take a couple of swipes with his snowblower to clear out the mailboxes - we are talking about an area less than 8ft x 4ft - he had a fit, started swearing about how the mailman can get his lazy ass out of the car and walk up to mailboxes .... we tried to explain that if mailboxes weren't cleaned out, no mail delivery. the concept didn't sink into knuckledraggers head and he continued with his little pissy-hissy fit.

I cleaned out the mailboxes... all of them, but it really irked me.

the following spring, knuckledragger started in on this is my property, keep out signs, put up a fence, and generally marked his "territory". (that's another long story)

the following winter, I was shoveling out the mailboxes, knuckledragger came barreling out his house, yelling and screaming at me to get off his property and even called the cops on me. so since then, I only shovel enough to clear out three of the mailboxes, leaving a huge pile of snow in front of "his" mailbox.

flashforward to this thursday's storm - (knuckledragger is not home during the week), Mrs. knuckledragger was out there with the snowblower and OMG - she cleared ALL of the mailboxes... I just about fainted

no hope for a repeat of that for this weekend's storm, as knuckledragger is home on the weekends and he takes care of snow removal

and they shoveled out their elderly neighbors for free.

As a kid, we did the same for our elderly neighbors.

Just seems like the thing to do to me.

25. I always hit the neighbors sidewalks

when shoveling my walk. The women on the 1st floor on both sides are elderly and their upstairs, very ablebodied neighbors are to damn lazy to shovel their own walks beyond the path to their cars. Having been injured by slipping and falling and seeing far too many people get hurt the same way, I think people that don't shovel their walks *at all* (recovering by continued snow is to be expected, I don't think that situation warrants a ticket) are flaming assholes that deserve to be run over by a snow plow.

It's being a good neighbor and citizen, and it's not like it's all that hard. I have a new asshole upstairs neighbor and they are lazy sons of bitches who don't bother to shovel the walk, just like the last neighbor. I leave my shovel and salt on the porch on the hopes that they'll take the initiative, but I doubt they will.

There are a lot of elderly people in my neighbohood and it's hard enough for them to get out and about (to the bus stop for example). Several of them don't venture out at all if there's been snow because they are afraid of slipping and falling on unshoveled walks, and that's just sad. When me and my brothers were kids, we damn near cleared the entire block we lived on, doing the elderly neighbors walks for free.

All snow and ice which has accumulated on the adjacent public sidewalk prior to 6am must be removed by noon.

That's not so helpful if you leave for work at 5am during a blizzard.

If being a single mom who couldn't afford a day off without pay made me a bad neighbor, so be it. If you've always been in a position where you got paid time off from work, that makes you maybe more privileged than other folks, but not better than them.
