It's gonna be a looong night with kitteh....
Home from surgery...tried to lick it open, had to run out and get an elizabethan collar, thrashing around like an f'n maniac trying to get it off...sigh. There's a little red blood (dried) on his sack, but it's not flowing and nothing appears to be opened or ruptured...

I can't imagine going through this with a female cat...

8. no they suggested it...
they said if he licks at it, he'll probably reopen the incision and need surgery all over again to fix it. He's mellowing a little, now that I let him out of the bedroom. He's just trying to figure out how to eat with it on.

5. All my kitteh's are females, and none of them did that kind of stuff.
They were very clingy when we brought them home from the vet's, but didn't try to tear the sutures off or anything.

I hope your little guy settles down soon.

7. Tonight will suck. Tomorrow he'll be mostly fine.
Probably a little tired and needy.

Dora and Piglet need to go in a couple of months. I'm trying to figure if it's best to do them both at once or one at a time. Probably both at once, or the one who didn't have surgery will drive the convalescing one nuts.

there's a new laser method for deballing the boys... but I think so far it's only been done on dogs. Not sure. Took our neighbor's dog and cat in for neutering last year (they asked us to - couldn't get to the vet's and back and to work on time), and they lasered the boy doggie but did the usual surgery for the boy kitteh.

Hope he settles down soon. for the kitteh

28. My vet does the laser on cats ...

Really seemed to decrease the trauma. Last cat I had neutered went the traditional route and was out of it for several days. Most recent trip by Mr. Franky, King of All He Imagines He Sees, was with the new proceedure, and I could barely tell he was troubled at all except by the trip to the vet itself.

20. I'll share with you a kinda funny in an effed way story with you
When our English bulldog got the ole snippers, well he still had his lil nut sack. It looked swolen to me, told the vet and he said "oh he'll be fine". Um no, his sack swelled up with liquid from the surgery. Mind you bulldogs are too stumpy to lick themselves so poor Thor rubbed up against something to ease the pain. He came walking into the living room barely, sat down, lifted his leg and his sack ruptured open. A stream of bloody liquid came shooting out of him, kinda like a fountain. I started screaming, aaahhhhhhhhh my poor baby. We took him to the vet and they put one of those collars on him, he didn't need it, he can't lick himself. They bandaged up the cut and he got better in a few days. We just had to make sure he didn't rub himself against anyhing.

He especially had a more difficult surgery because one of his testicles didn't drop so they had to go in and dig it out. :(

Hopefully Kitteh doesn't suffer like puppy did. Wait till we get our lil kitten snipped, oy......

21. Just did it with a female...it SUCKS!!
It sounds like Kitteh is having an adverse reaction to his pain meds, just like Kyra did. She thrashed around like a maniac until the meds were out of her system. I only ended up giving her one more dose and after that, the pain was tolerable for her. So if they sent Kitteh home with meds, you might consider not giving them to him. They seem to do more harm than good.

He should gradually chill out...and once the meds wear off, he'll pass out cold. ;)

22. No, no meds, I think it's the collar...
He didn't go nuts until that went on...We were too afraid of him re-opening the incision, which would have meant another round of anesthesia and surgery....He's ok right now, but very hyper.

24. Ahhh!
Well, with Kyra, they had the collar on her as soon as she started coming out of anesthesia, so I think she just kinda accepted it as part of whatever was causing her pain. Amazingly, she wore it essentially without complaint for over a WEEK.

It sounds like the collar is necessary for the time being...just be thankful his healing time isn't very long! Good luck tonight. ;)

I think they thought he didn't need one, as he was so out of it and sedate when they gave him to us...As soon as he was home, the licking commenced! We called, and they were like "Oh, you need a collar" :eyes:

26. We just did go through it with a female
And it was pretty much what you described.

She left her stitches alone for about a day, then when she was washing herself she started to pull at them. (When she did that, it made everybody cringe.) The vet's office suggested firmly telling her "no" when she did so (say "no" to a cat? surely you jest!) but she kept on. I wound up getting a plastic clown collar (for $11.25; silly me, I thought they'd give me one free, as cheaply made as this thing was) and by the time we took it off, about eight days later, she had torn the thing to shreds. She hated it; she slinked around the house like she was terminally embarrassed, and generally hated us all for that indignity. She couldn't scratch behind her ear or her neck under the thing, and she could not wash herself, so she was not the happiest of kittehs for awhile. (The vet's office also said she'd get used to the collar "in a day or two.")

She got the stitches out on Monday and the tech said that she did, indeed, pull a couple out.

More worrisome though, is this: When I was looking at her tummy on Sunday, I noticed a small lump around the stitches. It was not red, and it was about the size of a marble. The tech had the vet look at it and the vet said it was subcutaneous, but he's not sure exactly what it is. It could be residue swelling from the operation. We were to take note of its "normal" appearance and give the office a call should we notice any change.

(This kitteh, by the way, was adopted from my place of work. She had just had kittens and was looking at a long, cold, lonely winter outdoors. She now rules the roost. She's a sweet tortie by the name of Pepper.)

We didn't enjoy the procedure much with a girl kitteh either, but it was FAR better than hearing her horny yowl over and over at 3 in the morning, the little shit.

30. Dread, fear and loathing...
Gonna have to get this little beast, Pixie, spayed in January. I am not looking forward to it, but I am duly noting everyone else's experiences. I've had boy cats denutted in the past, and they pretty much recovered in a couple of days without needing collars, though at first they sat down pretty carefully.

And I don't wanna risk reopening the incision. One surgery was enough for my budget this December. x(

32. I must thank you guys...didn't know how lucky I've been!
Seriously!
I thought 'the Procedure' had seriously mellowed MacFeegle's personality...:boring: truth was, it took him about ten days to really get over it. After that, he was back to normal (except for that 'swelling of pride').
Wimsey sat down very carefully for a few days...but otherwise no problems.
