Angry middle aged woman rant!
How do people get a sense of entitlement?

I was at the ATM and the bank today, and I overheard an exchange between a "lady" (she was no lady) and a man. Apparently the "lady" was going into the bank, and the man was coming out. The man opened the door and proceded to walk out of the bank. The "lady" then launched into him for not holding the door for her, because she was a "lady", and she cast all sorts of aspersions on the man's manners. She was in no way unable to open and hold the door for herself, except for the fact that she believes the XX chromosome set affords her the luxury of guilting and shaming any man she comes into contact with that does not "do the gentlemanly thing, whatever the fuck that is".

I called her on it and told her she was incredibly rude. I wish my brain had been along for the ride because in retrospect I would have told her that "polite ladies" do not call attention to the shortcomings of others.

6. The "lady" leaves a lot to be desired.

Hells, I'm not gonna stand around waiting for some knight in shining armor to open a door for me. People DO hold doors open for me, and I do the same for others. And, I am QUITE capable of opening a door for my own self.

The "lady" needs a lesson in modern day courtesy.

9. I always hold the door for people, male and female.
I just consider it basic politeness. I'm beginning to reconsider my position, however, due to the number of people who breeze past me without so much as a nod, as if I'm their personal frickin' doorman.

11. I agree that it's a basic politeness and I hope you won't let the rudeness of others...
influence you to change your behavior. Try to remember that your small motion of kindness may be the only positive social interaction some people have in the course of the day. Try to remember the smiles and the thanks you get from those people and let karma take care of the rest.

13. You're right, of course, and I won't change my behavior.

But I can still fantasize about thwacking some self-obsessed "Real Housewife of Orange County" in the back of the head with a heavy door, though. ;)

16.  sometimes karma takes the form of a heavy door
thwacking someone in the head. It would be much more interesting though if it hits the face and not the back. "By dose, by dose, now I'll neber be a teen model!"

...on all the 40+ year old "teen models" around here. For some reason, matching face and handbag seems so be something of a fashion in these parts.

18. i got a rant...an older lady on the bus made a spectacle
Edited on Thu Dec-13-07 02:35 AM by CreekDog
when i was 12 for a little while i was on crutches and i sat on the MUNI bus, not even in the front and an older lady asked me for my seat. so i told her sorry i wasn't able to give it to her --i actually apologized and said i couldn't give it to her and i said it quietely.

then she looked straight at me and in a really loud voice she said "what manners young man!" so i said, "do you know you know where i'm going?" and when she said no, i said, "the doctors" and showed my crutches. i said it quietely but when people saw the crutches, they glared at her big time and she said, "so sorry!" curtly.

then there was the time the very old man on the 14 Mission bus kicked me for being too bratty. thinking back, i deserved that.
