The bad news: I missed my Jeopardy! audition. The good news: she saved my foot.

Actually this was in 2002. I had ankle surgery. Was in a cast afterward, and when the cast was removed we found that the wound was infected VERY badly (I won't describe it).

After surgery to clean the wound, Mrs. V. changed the bandage every four hours, then every eight hours, then twice a day. For weeks. I don't remember exactly but I think this went on for three months, and it took almost a year for the ankle to heal completely.

She saved my foot. Every four hours -- you know what that means: she had to wake up in the middle of the night.

So because of the infection I lost my chance to audition for Jeopardy! It was scheduled for March 15, and this was right in the middle of all the bandage changes.

But Mrs. V. saved my foot.

Yeah, the foot-saving and the audition are related only by timing, but it made a good subject line, right?

Sounds like you had an extremely nasty infection -- yikes. Ever thought about auditioning again for Jeopardy?

4. doing OK. Weird, warm weather down here --

We're trying to move back up to the DC area this coming spring, but it will all depend on how the next few projects work out... I'm going a little crazy here in the midst of the Bible Belt, though western NC is very beautiful. You know what's weird, though? I have NEVER ONCE seen deer here. They're all over the place in Virginia (sadly, too many of them get hit) but they used to wander through our yard when we lived in rural northern Virginia. I've been in western NC (southwest of Asheville) since 2004, though, and have NEVER seen a deer in all of North Carolina. Just bizarre.

I hope Alex Trebeck stays with Jeopardy! post-heart attack! Wouldn't really be the same without him.
