Who is the most famous person ever?
I'm gonna say Mohammed, although Kylie Minogue runs a close second, thanks to the internets.

5. Depends on how you define famous
I've heard that Pope John Paul II holds the record as the man seen in person by more other people in history.

6. Gotta be J.C.
With the missionary tendencies of many Christian sects, there's damn few people who haven't heard of Jesus. The fact that his fame has been sustained for a couple millennia, I think pretty much seals the deal.

8. I'd like to think that His fame was due to his "love one another" creed,
rather than for missionary zeal. But who knows?

9. You'd like to think that (and so would I) but...
let's face it. There's been plenty of other people who have dedicated their lives to that same creed. But none of them had an army of followers spreading their message.

15. That was my first guess, but...
...then I remembered that there really isn't any reason t suppose he was real. Same with Moses. Mohammad was certainly a real person.

16. Definitely a good point. If we're gonna go with people who can be historically verified...
I guess I gotta go with one of the other big religious leaders too. Mohammad or Buddha, I suppose. Probably Buddha, actually, when you consider the amount of people in India and China. Then again, Mohammad's certainly as well known in India. I dunno. Tough call.

30. My own research says he is not.
I'm busy too, but archeological evidence contradicts many of the claims concerning his birth.

32. His birth story could well be mythical.
He, as a historical figure in history though, is pretty well-documented. As least as much as other figures in history whom we accept as to have existed.

34. If you can point to anything outside the Bible...
...I would be glad to know about it.

When you say other figures in history we accept as existed, I wonder who you have in mind. We know about Alexander, for example, because of contemporaneous writing that survives, a city he founded, the hellenistic influence on all of the Mediterranean world. Others who knew him wrote about him. His enemies wrote of their defeats. Augustus visited his tomb. The point is I don't need to credit any single source to accept that he existed. His face has been plastered all over the ancient world.

On the other hand, all the information about JC was written by people who did not know him and based it on earlier oral stories. What is more, the accounts do not agree with each other. Bishop Spong theorizes that the increasingly elaborate cannonical gospels were really liturgical calendars designed to replace the Jewish one. In other words they are of theological origin, not historical. JC did not spread Judaism or Christianity the way Al spread hellenism. That had to wait first for Paul and then for Constantine. Roman records confirm that Pilate was real. I am not aware that he ever wrote about Jesus. In fact no one but his followers did. None of the miracles were noted by any contemporary source. At the crucifixion, there were storms, earth quakes and dead people walkin g around. None of the Romans or Jews wrote about that. Paul, the oldest Christian writer, notes nothing about his life and does not mention any miracle. And frankly, without those, what's so special about him. There was nothing especially original about his teachings. His whole history seems to be reverse engineered.

Like I said, if there is any evidence, I would be happy to hear about it.

Weren't there studies back in Jordan's halycon days that showed that Aboriginal tribespeople in the depths of Africa were able to recognize Michael Jordan's face?
