3. Ultimately, to me it is just a natural extension of human rights.
People should be free to believe as they wish, absent coercion by the state. Freedom to believe or not believe is and so it in a manner in which one finds appropriate is, to me, essential to a full pursuit of happiness. It is also essential for good government - not only so that religion does not become entangled with the laws of the nation, but so that religion can (ideally) serve as an unofficial check on governmental powers. Paradoxically enough, it is also essential for good religion. Without such a separation, people's enmity towards the government inevitably bleeds over to the state religion and membership plummets. In the end, separation of church and state is good for both the church and the state.
