Anybody know anything about Moody Bible Institute?
I know it's a religious university in Chicago but is it a fairly normal school like DePaul or Notre Dame, a little peculiar like Wheaton College or way, way out there in the realm of Regent/Liberty/Bob Jones?

1. Well, a friend of mine got a flyer from them,
advertising a "Pastor's Weekend". Lots of big name Evangelical speakers, workshops, etc. So she called to sign up. The person on the phone started telling her about the "pastor's wives' events". My friend explained that she's a pastor, not a pastor's wife. The person at Moody told her women can't be pastors and hung up on her.

So, I'd say "way out there".

9. Yeah, Moody founded it.
He was an odd duck. A Congregationalist, but a fundie. Hard to do that today.

10. Our school was....interesting
Started as an all girls school in the 19th century, became two gender separate campuses, became coed in the 70s. Still carry some of the original school practices (all campus meeting, singing "Jerusalem", the tradition of the one-tined fork), but very very not fundie at all.

12. Yes indeed...
Class of '95. :)

One tined fork...If a fork had only one tine, it would be difficult to eat with, but you would make all the effort to do so. So do like that in your daily struggles...or something like that. We just liked the big paper-mache fork replica they'd haul out in chapel once a year...

4. I don't know, but I bet they have a website
Yes, they do, and they sound as if anyone who was not at least a strong evangelical would be uncomfortable there. They seem to specialize in training students for the ministry and other positions in evangelical and fundamentalist churches.

7. Yeah, they do. Big write up on wikipedia, too.
Wiki even lists all their official martyrs and that's really what caught my eye and made me wonder what their deal was.

I'm actually checking references on a job applicant who works on staff there.

6. It's older and more established than Regent, Liberty or Bob Jones
But it's profoundly evangelical. It's assumed you're an evangelical Christian when you go there. They are not gifts-of-the-Spirit charismatic types though. Very down on that.

As mentioned upthread, it's specifically a missionary training school.

13. Speaking in Tongues and that sort of thing.

There are some branches of Christianity which don't believe you're truly saved without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which is evidenced by speaking in tongues, according to the 2nd Chapter of Acts

Acts 2

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

.....although 1 Corinthians 12 says that is only one of many spiritual gifts...

1 Corinthians 12

1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.

3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

figured out the reasons for the way Yaweh acts out.
