Ok, so I just watched the most depressing Futurama ever.
I guess I missed this episode when it originally aired. The episode was about Fry finding his old dog at an archaeology show. He tries to clone the fossilized dog, using the Professor's cloning machine. While they wait for the dog to be cloned, the show flashes back to how Fry met the dog (in 1997, delivering pizza and finding the starving dog), how their relationship was built and then eventually Fry's being frozen, which takes him to the future.

Fry is adamant that his dog be cloned, since it's his link to the past. However, after the Professor tells him the dog lived 7 years after Fry had been frozen, he realizes that the dog probably lived a good life and had completely forgotten about him. So he decides to not clone the dog. The show ends, with the credits rolling, showing Fry's dog -- who spent every waking moment searching for Fry -- waiting outside the pizzeria where Fry worked. Years go by, but the dog continues waiting for Fry to return, but of course he never does. :(

Downer.

4. I think that particular episode of Futurama hits everyone in the gut
I know it's been mentioned here before and IRL I've had no fewer than 3 different people comment to me on how emotional it made them.

7. i remember that one
one of the most touching cartoon episodes i've ever seen and all the more affecting because it was out of the blue -- every other episode i've seen of this show goes for the laughs not to touch the heart

9. What I really miss about the Simpsons these days is the heart the show used to have
I don't know if that was James L Brooks's influence or what, but the first three seasons really tugged at the heartstrings in a believable way. Then the series went down the Family-guy esque "anything is possible" pop culture humor road, which they did brilliantly for about seven more seasons.

10. That's one of my favorite episodes.
And the ending is very sad. What makes it worse is the song that is playing at the end of the song, "I Will Wait For You." Although I think that episode ending was well done, it definitely pulls at your heart strings, doesn't it?

11. I've seen it once, and only once
I have the complete collection on DVD, but I always skip that episode.

It is too painful to watch.

12. The first time I saw that episode
I was like, "now why'd they have to go and do that? That's really sad." :(

I still think it is, but it's also one of my favorites for the emotional response it evokes, very much unlike the rest of them.

13. That episode always makes me tear up...
It is one of those things that just hits you in the gut, as another poster said. On a lighter note, watch the new feature length DVD, "Bender's Big Score", no spoilers, just watch it.
