SNOW in Los Angeles!!
Ok, not falling out of the sky, but still...

I was driving to work today, minding my own business. I come to a stop at a red light and I casually look to my left. And I see a parking lot FULL of snow.

Me: Oh, look! Snow! Wait. WHAT? WTF is that doing there? Uhhh...

I managed to grab my phone and take a picture just as the light changed:

Clearly the most logical explanation, given that this is Los Angeles, is that it's part of a movie shoot. However, that truck was the only vehicle anywhere near the snow. No movie trucks. No cameras. No people. It's not cold out, if anyone needed it for a movie, they'd be using it and fast...before it melts.

It's not a "hey, let's bring in some snow and let the natives play in it" kind of thing because a) the parking lot was wedged between two rather unsavory car repair places, b) the snow was dirty, and c) again, no people.

It's an overcast day, in the mid 60s. The water on the window came from a sprinkler, it's not even raining, nor has it been.

I'm so confused.

6. No ice rink for MILES
and yeah, clearly thought of the movie shoot...but there was nobody anywhere near it. Movie shoots come with loads of equipment and people that hang out in the area for days. There was nothing there last night.

2. Is that building an indoor ice rink?
If so, the snow might be from the Zamboni.

7. Damn it!
I hate it when people haul their snow down from Seattle or Utah and just dump it wherever they please. Bastards. ;)

13. I think it came from even farther north!
No doubt the handiwork of Illegal CANADIANS, who also have absolutely no trace of an American accent.

8. I love that song!
But...it's not burning...it's...randomly covered in ice crystals, stuck together to form a small mound of snow...or...something... ;)

10. It was strangely prophetic during the SC wildfires
Anytime anything out of the ordinary happens in LA that song pops up in my head.

Actually, when this last round of fires was at its peak, that song came on my iPod. I wasn't even aware I *had* it on my iPod.

Strangely prophetic, indeed.

14. in Studio City on Ventura Blvd?
If so, I saw the truck that was making the snow too. I assume it was for a movie/commercial shoot of some kind. I think it was Sunday I was driving past it on my way to Trader Joes.

Sunday? Really?! Oh dear god...my observation skills are horrid!

Mystery solved!

On edit: that must have started out as a veritable FUCKLOAD of snow. It was 85-90 for 2 days this week. Wow.

20. horrid observation skills?
Naw, I was making a right turn onto ventura from either Colfax or Tujunga (I forget) and so I was literally facing the truck while I was waiting. That's the only reason I noticed it. And there were a number of people milling around at the time and the truck gave me a clue -- it said something on it (now my observation/memory skills are being challenged) about ice or snow making truck..... ;)

21. Yes, well...
I drive by there twice a day. Granted, the 2nd time is after dark. But still. I can't believe there was a ginormous pile of snow sitting there all week and I just now noticed.

19. Oh geez...
if there was ACTUALLY that much snow here, it would be Armageddon.

Seriously. A few drops of rain and you'd think the world was coming to an end. Natives here wouldn't have the first clue about what to do with 2-4 inches of snow. Everything would be closed for the duration.

25. It has actually snowed in Los Angeles before
Edited on Thu Dec-06-07 05:13 PM by kwassa
snowed in the San Fernando Valley one year when I lived out there. The snow only lasted a few hours in the middle of the night, and parents were getting their kids out of bed, to go outside and play in the snow.

Errol Flynn had a story where he got snowed into his place up on Mulholland Drive, way back when, and forced the studio to fly him to work in a helicopter.

and, we used to go up to do cross-country skiing in the Angeles Crest highway above LA in mid-winter. Mt. Pinos is also a great place to go, near Frazier Park. Snow is a function of altitude around LA. Anything above 7000 feet will have snow, and the level will drop down as low as 2000 feet in the really cold storms.
