Worst first date movies
In honor of the great Travis Bickle, submit your best worst first date movie idea. Mine would be 'Irreversible'. Anyone who's seen it knows what I mean. That is, unless your on a date with the type of girl who becomes less repulsed by the male gender after watching 7 minute long rape scenes.

5. I once sent a letter to a friend telling him I had enjoyed
"The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover." He took this as a recommendation to take a girl to it on a first date. There was no second date. He was, I think, a little pissed off at me, though I had been perfectly candid about what sort of movie it was.

And yes, I would agree that Irreversable might be the number-one No First Date movie.

"I Stand Alone". Scenes of a man punching his pregnant girlfriend in the gut and later spooning, then shooting his teenage daughter in the neck are probably turn-offs for most girls.

like ott, intense films, that would be ok.

But more innocuous fare would probably work better.

I don't actually remember the plot of the film well enough to remember if there was an actual Mr. GOodbar.

if she's not going to enjoy that, why bother having a second date? she/he certainly won't be any good in bed, so there's no point waiting around for that, and she's not good for a life partner, cause she/he, well, kinda sucks. so why bother sticking around?

34. This one happened. Troy.
She said she wanted to see if it stuck to the Iliad at all. After two-plus hours of looking at Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, and Orlando Bloom mostly running around in shirtless or in this sort of male sarong thing that somehow contrived to show off chests and legs simultaneously, I could see her looking at me and thinking, "hell, no." There was no second date.

And, she was not the type you expected to be into that sort of thing from speaking with her - she seemed kind of the sweet & innocent type. I know I asked her, "Are you sure about that?"

It was a while back, but I'm pretty sure we didn't go on a second date.

:wow:

My wife likes Romantic Comedies best, and I don't think she'd ever want to see something like, say, Clockwork Orange on a date.

53. Most of the movies people have posted
such as a horror movie, or even, I Spit On Your Grave, would not necessarily be a deal breaker. If we had just seen Clockwork Orange, we would have a lot to talk about afterward! Clockwork Orange is my favorite movie anyway.

I think an overly sappy, corny romantic movie would be bad on a first date. I'd feel awkward because the first date is just a getting-to-know-you event, not a promise of love.

57. good point.
especially about Clockwork Orange, since it's also my default choice when someone asks me that impossible question "What's your favorite movie". Definitely facilitates conversation. Just because it has a rape scene and a bit of ultraviolence doesn't make it a bad first date movie IMO, as long as your date isn't a prude, and if you are and didn't know it, it would perform as a prude detector, making it a great first date movie in either scenario.

67. Oooh! Another one: "Faces of Death" (any of the series)
Those would not be good first date movies.

68. "The Descent."
I went with a friend and his fiancee. He loved it, she had her face buried in his shoulder for 2/3s of the movie. I wound up apologizing to her for not knowing how violent it'd be.

Glad I didn't ask a date to go see it...ah, who'm I kidding. I get a date maybe once every six months.

72. Rent The Handmaids Tale.
Before you put it in tell your date It's sci-fi set in a utopian future. Later when he/ she tries to correct you by saying it was actually dystopian just stare at her/ him blankly and ask "What do you mean?"

If you get a second date stick with this person. They have a sense of humor that can get them through ANYTHING.

:)

74. Any movie that you actually want to watch.
I was so mad at my then boyfriend when we went to see Ghostrider, I really wanted to see that movie. Instead I had to spend the entire movie fending off his advances.

As a gay couple I would also state that watching Philidephia with your other half is also a mood killer.

79. Lawrence of Arabia
nominated because I took a Turkish man that I was interested in to a theater showing of this flick many summers ago. Wasn't thinking clearly with this one. Kinda killed a budding relationship.

84. Death Wish
That was actually a "first date" movie I went on.

Right after it started - the first "bad" scene, my date looked at me and said, "I'm so sorry. Do you want to leave?"

86. John Water's "Pink Flamingos"
Someone honestly took me to it on a first date. It was playing at the Art House. Neither of us had read any reviews beforehand, and thought it would be really classy and meaningful.

Needless to say, that was also the last date.

95. the alpha and the omega are too far apart in that movie
it's a date-kill, unless you are picking up girls from the poetry slam at the hippie bookstore. then maybe. of course, I cannot sit for the nine or whatever hours long that movie is anyway.

101. Polanski has a few
Knife in the Water - Sort of a savage parody of sexual competition. Not squicky, but will leave you feeling hostile and mistrustful towards both genders.

Repulsion - Great movie, but anyone who wants to get laid after watching it is not someone you want to be around.

The Tenant - Remember in Ghostbusters, when Bill Murray was slimed. That is what this movie does to your psyche.

Also, what's with the mainstream horror and suspense movies being listed? I thought that stuff was classic dating fare.
