10. Dear God, I hope not...
the last Phil Collins flamewar was horrible. They had to shut down the Lounge for six days, and then shut down GD for five hours to prevent it from spreading. Something like 856 posters got banned. It was terrible!

On the bright side, the DUzys from that week were awesome!

The 80's was the nadir of music, wasn't it?

19. Actually there was a lot of great music in the 80s
(climbing on soapbox here)

I'm a child of the 80s.

But top 40 just really, really sucked then, as now. The good music had a hard time making it (and for a brief period after Nirvana did become popular). Was Husker Du a better band than the Beatles? By any reasonable objective standard they were. 80s band.

Phil Collins did suck, tho.

I knew you were probably a Genxer when reading your posts on baby boomers. I know that this is a generalization, but the 80's were too "synthesized" for my taste.

7. I can't say I've always been a fan of Phil Collins but I really grew to like him when
I found out how much he admired Peter Gabriel and how hard it was going to be to fill his shoes. I was a big fan of early Genesis and I was sad to see Gabriel leave but I also consider Seconds Out one of my favorite Genesis albums with Phil on lead vocals. I also think he did a really good job when he was acting on Miami Vice. He was really good! I also think this video shows off his talents on drums rather well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUR4k0LyTdc

26. I wouldn't call myself a raving fan,
but he's got a number of songs I like. 'In the Air Tonight' is phenomenal. Stunning and groundbreaking. The remake of 'Can't Hurry Love' is good and catchy. 'I Missed Again' is a wonderful little blast of english soul. 'Take Me Home' is a nice, long, meandering rhythmic play. And, ahem, I like 'Sussudio'. Not as crazy about his more sappy contributions, i.e. 'Against All Odds', although the piano is kind of pretty. And he's one of the most instantly recognizable drummers around. The moment I heard the drums on 'Intruder' from Peter Gabriel's 'Face Melting' album, I knew it was him. Don't need to check the liner notes. And then there's his work with Genesis.

I also like Husker Du. You can like both.

27. That sound was invented for that Peter Gabriel album
and Collins liked it, so he often worked with Hugh Padgham as an engineer/producer after that:

Padgham is credited with creating the 'gated' drum sound used so prominently on Phil Collins' single "In the Air Tonight", and which became the template for much of the of recorded pop drum sound of the 1980s. The effect is believed to have first been used on the 1980 third self-titled solo album by Peter Gabriel, which Padgham engineered and on which Collins played. At this time, Padgham was working regularly as the recording engineer for noted UK producer Steve Lillywhite, and they collaborated on many well-known albums and singles in the early 1980s.

Padgham's 'gated drum' effect is created by adding a large amount of heavily compressed room ambience to the original drum sound, and then feeding that reverb signal through an electronic device known as a noise gate. This unit can be programmed to cut off any signal fed through it, either after a specified time interval (in this case, some tens of milliseconds), or when the incoming signal falls below a preset volume threshold. The result is the arresting 'gated reverb' effect, in which the reverberation cuts off abruptly, rather than fading away.

In a 2006 interview, Padgham revealed how the effect was first engineered: "The whole thing came through the famous 'listen mic' on the SSL console. The SSL had put this massive compressor on it because the whole idea was to hang one mic in the middle of the studio and hear somebody talking on the other side. And it just so happened that we turned it on one day when Phil (Collins) was playing his drums. And then I had the idea of feeding that back into the console and putting the noise gate on, so when he stopped playing it sucked the big sound of the room into nothing."

28. I loved the drum sound on "Mama"
Which was an awesome song.

I started listening to Collins in the 80's, which led up to Genesis' "Invisible Touch", which led to earlier Genesis with Gabriel, and then Gabriel's solo work. I love all of them, but am not as much a fan of Phil's most recent work.

With Genesis, I tended to like some of the songs that weren't on the radio as much. I like that all of their albums had a couple of longer songs, with more instrumental stuff.

Duke is the last studio album I really like. Have you heard their last live album - "The Way We Walk: The Longs"? The only track under 10 minutes is the 6 minute Drum Duet with Chester Thompson. It could be right up your street.

Hell of a drum duet.

I would have liked to see the Genesis reunion tour, but they tickets were too rich for my blood, and the shows were all too far away.

33. Cool, did not know that.
I became musically aware during the 80's, so I assumed that sound was something Collins brought with him, rather than took away from the session.

Yeah, that 'gated' sound. Besides Collins, the one that really stands out is the Power Station (with Robert Palmer) drummer.

31. I had a DATE with Phil Collins ! yeah, really!
He is the sweetest man....

I met him backstage when he was in Houston with Genesis (years ago)
talked for about an hour or two..... he asked me what kind of music
I liked to listen to that wasn't R&R, I said Motown..he did his first solo CD shortly after that... I like to think
that I influenced him.....chatted about lots of things.
smart and interesting guy.

..we had several drinks waiting for the first band to play...

Saw the concert with my friends (old friends of theirs from
England) front row....

met up later to go out on the town,, we went to a bar/disco
and they wouldn't let Phil or me in because we had jeans on...
(yeah, really)

So I spent a quiet evening with Genesis and my friends,
had dinner, long night of drinks....
he asked me up to his room.... and, and, and,,,,,
I said "no, better not." sweet little kiss and it was over.

he asked me if I wanted to join the rest of the tour,
I said no... had to go to work.....

yeah, I still kick myself....sometimes,

Ah, the old "what could've been story........

32. Liked his work w/ Brand X and most of what he did with Genesis.
I saw him Canada Day weekend 1985 in TO (excellent show). Can't say I like all
his stuff, but what's good is great, IMO. If you haven't heard it yet, go get the
remastered "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway". He more than holds his own with Peter Gabriel
on that album.
