Noooo! My computer is totally infected with virus, trojans, adware and so on...
I'm not a newbie when it comes to computers. In the past I fought those damn things and won because

I'm a big boy :) but today I have to admit my defeat.

Dang! Now I must re-format my c: drive and reinstall Winblows XPee.But that's not the worst. The

problem is the tons of programs that I have to reinstall!

It will take me at least a week!!!!

Please send me some positive vibes.I'll need it!

2. My FIL got a rootkit into his PC somehow.
It shuts down the computer if he tries to use it at all. Very bad stuff. He's afraid he's lost a lot.

Good luck to you--I hope your situation is easily resolved!

6. Thanks for caring tofunut.
In the past I always managed to get rid of those virus, trojan, etc. But

now I got nuked very hard.

When my anti-virus software detected something I restored the machine and everything was

back to normal, but this time I got screwed very bad.All my restoration points were deleted!

No way back for poor me.

Well at least when I realized how badly my machine was infected I managed to transfer

most of my important files to another hard drive.

That's the only positive thing.

Right now I'm in "Safe Mode".That's why I still can post on DU.

Well tomorrow it will be format and install XP Day.Sigh...

I talked my FIL--he's had to take his in to be worked on and it looks like he's lost most of what was on his PC. Eeeyikes.

It's nice that you can post--If nothing else, you'll get some advice and sympathy!

4. A few years ago, I got a nasty virus.
A dialogue box popped up on the screen, saying a virus had been detected. Before I could do anything, it just shut down, and I couldn't get it to reboot at all. It was just a great big paperweight. I took it in, and they found the problem...the "beagle" virus. Having lived with beagles as long as I have, I was not surprised.

17. .
Earlier this year I had several (a lot not just a few) hard drive sectors go bad all at once. Didn't noticeably affect performance. No clue there was anything wrong. But it caused the security software to fail. Next think I knew I was getting delivery failure notices from all over the world in languages I could not even identify. Hundreds of them. Before discovering the hard drive problem I tried all sorts of things to rid the pc of all sorts of nasty stuff. Nothing worked of course. Just wasted my time and tried my patience. Fortunately I had data backed up. I decided the computer had enough time on it that it wasn't worth replacing the hard drive. So I went shopping and got a new laptop - with Vista. Not only had to reinstall all the software I also had to upgrade some of it. The printer isn't fully Vista compliant and no longer will duplex. The wireless router now has to be manually installed. Nothing at all good about that experience.

Positive vibes? Apparently, you don't also have a hardware failure to address. And you are still using XP. Oh, and you'll have a clean machine after you finish reinstalling everything.

40. I have investigated your claim
Edited on Sat Dec-01-07 06:09 PM by jasonc
and found that this particular thing requires user interaction, you physically have to uncompress it in an attempt to see what it is. Anyone dumb enough to do that deserves to get whatever they get. This is just a unix Executable file. It cant do anything on its own without some person actually doing something as well.

I however can not get infected by something by doing nothing but browsing the web, like you can on your PC.

In-fact, read this: http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/security_response/weblog/2006/07/macinenterprise_mac_os_x_virus.html

I know people love their MACs, and I've used them on a couple of jobs. My grandchilden use them in their elementary schools.

But most of us are PC users, running Windows software, for better or for worse. There ARE reasons for it. One of the main reasons in our family is that my husband is a retired software engineer who went with IBM compatibles when Apple was making the wrong decisions about moving into the business arena. I know they have tried to right that wrong, but it's really too late for us. We have several thousands of dollars invested in hardware and software. But thanks for the hint and...

Thank you for listening.

I'll be 69 years old next May and I like to think I've learned a thing or two in all that time.

I went swimming for more than an hour and sat in a hot therapy pool with some other people. Relaxing makes my physical and mental problems feel a lot better (back injury August 2006; depression over world and political issues).

I happened to speak with a man whose brother's wife just passed away today from leukemia at age 36, leaving two small children. He was going to fly out to her funeral tomorrow.

We have to accept the fact that this life is short and very challenging. Getting all wound up over small matters -- adds nothing but stress to our lives.

I had a minor in psychology in college (I think that was 12 units), but decided I didn't want to deal with other people's problems in a therapy setting.

Interestingly enough, my former husband was in communications, but left it all to marry another woman. Together, they set up a psychological counseling practice in Vermont, and they had a better life in a small town.

Tonight is the memorial of his death last year, on December 1, 2006. I am truly sorry he died. Unfortunately, he was a smoker for decades, and lung cancer took him away.
