I'm moving to Ohio; tell me anything
I have accepted a position with a company in Zanesville, Ohio (~50 mi. east of Columbus on I-70), and aside from a three-day visit earlier this month, I'm completely unfamiliar with the area.

LynneSin tells me that some who frequent this forum are Buckeyes, so I'd appreciate hearing from any of you with hints, tips & local lore. You may include Columbus in your replies, since I expect to be spending a lot of time there for both business and pleasure.

Thanks in advance :hi:

2. Facts about Ohio and Ohioans
Ohio is so flat that you can see eastern Indiana from western Pennsylvania.

Ohio's state department of transportation is called ODOT. If that's not preposterous, I don't know what is.

In Ohio it is illegal to exit a brothel wearing the same pants that you wore when you entered.

In Ohio, muzzle-loading weapons may not be discharged within ten paces of a gas or electrical meter.

True facts, each and every one.

17. More facts about Ohioans
Some very Turtley people were born in Ohio, has a dad who lives in Ohio currently (Cincinnati), has a sister who was also born in Ohio on one of the Seven Hills of Cincinnati, not far from CLIFTON--named for the very high cliffs overlooking the Ohio River. Both this persons parents were born in Cleveland and enjoys the rolling hills of Northeast Ohio that presage the mountains of Western Pennsylvania.
How presposterous is that?

True facts, each and every one....

3. Put all of your Go Wolverines! pennants up for sale on eBay
And check out the Indian mounds, too (my favorite thing as youth in Ohio)

4. Seen those
I checked out Newark, Ohio, during my three-day trip earlier this month and saw the Great Circle Earthworks.

I currently live about 25 miles from Angel Mounds in southern Indiana. Can't seem to get away from them.

5. Hi neighbor!
I'm in Columbus. :hi:

Okay, so some things about Ohio....

It's cold and it snows.

One of our Senators is a Republican douchebag (Voinovich). x(

We have a newly elected Democratic Senator, Governor, and Secretary of State. :bounce:

You have to provide ID when voting.

You must register to vote 30 days prior to the election you want to vote in.

The Buckeyes are a huge deal. If you're not into football, always shop when the game is on. The stores are eerily empty. There will be a spurt of activity during half-time to run to the convenient store or grocery to get beer.

The Football Hall of Fame is in Canton. It's pretty cool.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is in Cleveland. It pretty much sucks.

Buckeye nuts are poisonous, so don't let kids or pets get to them.

Anything you want to know....just ask!

Hope you enjoy living in the Buckeye State. :hi:

I would have said that Buckeye nuts are a ridiculous and a bit fanatical, but I wouldn't call them poisonous. :P

9. Hi VR!
:hi:

I'm doing pretty well, all things considered. I'm dealing with my decreased mobility. I might have my scooter as soon as next week. I might have a new roommate soon too. And I may have a cleaning person for my apartment after next weekend. All in all, I'm feeling pretty positive about things. :)

How are you doing?

I hope it continues that way for you. I'll hold a good thought for you.

I'm doing pretty well. The early part of the week I was feeling kinda crappy, but I'm much better today.

And I only have one more Christmas gift to get, and it's online! :woohoo:

26. I think I can handle the 'Buckeye nuts' just fine
considering the lunacy that occurs with great regularity where I currently live.

Apparently, this story has gained nationwide attention. Check out the video at the following link.

I used to work with the woman's husband, therefore I was already steeped in 'Shithead' lore.

I am so ready to move!

12. Okay, here's what I can tell ya...
1) You're sort of my neighbor, if you keep traveling on I-70 and visit Pittsburgh!
2) Ohio State Buckeyes are arch rivals of Universitiy (Go Blue) of Michigan, which Mr. Mickey's Dad is very loyal. Therefore, anyone from U of M will probably be familiar with hating Ohio State.
3) The Buckeyes's favorite saying is "Muck Fishigan!"
4) You have nicer roadside stops and infrastructure than Pennsylvania does (jealous).
5) I hear a lot of great things about Columbus, OH.
6) You should make a point of visiting Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
7) This is the strangest comment.... For some reason people in the SW of PA and NE of Ohio don't know how to use conjuctive phrases when speaking English. You even hear TEACHERS using this venacular...

(if the floor is dirty...) "This floor needs WASHED."
(if you need to check something...) "Does it need CHECKED?" You get the idea :-) You gotta love these people anyway, they are some of the friendliest people in the US.

If you find yourself pining for intellectual stimulation in a small liberal college town, head down there. Did I mention it's absolutely beautiful?

14. I'll honk my horn as I pass by from now on.
I was once stuck on the Zanesville I-70 bridge for 3 hours. I'd never thought of jumping before that! :grr:

It is an older town that has an interesting history. It was the capitol of Ohio for a brief period in the early 1800's. Many architecturally unique buildings have been preserved there. Famous author, Zane Grey, ('Riders of the Purple Sage') is from Zanesville. A portion of the downtown has experienced a sort of renaissance with many new artsy shops and galleries to explore.

Good luck with your move!

16. I'm in Columbus!
Happy to suggest good restaurants/bars/etc in Columbus if you're interested. One fun thing is that the first weekend of every month is "Gallery Hop" in the Short North arts district. Galleries show new stuff, stay open late, and there's a general hubbub and festivity in the air. You should check it out (but maybe wait until it warms up!).

Happy to answer any other questions you have...

18. I always stop in Zanesville when I am driving to Cincinnati
to visit my Dad from my home in Maryland. I will say that Zanesville seems to be a good location, pretty centrally located. You aren't too far from Dayton either. I don't know if this interests you but every year there is a HUGE air show in Dayton at Wright-Patterson. Worth attending if you are at all interested in planes (my dad was an engineer at GE's aircraft engine plant in Cinci before he retired).

and thanks to everyone for their helpful responses.

As a side note, I've signed up for the e-mail newsletter from Drinking Liberally, Columbus chapter. It meets the first Thursday of each month at Byrne's Pub from 6:30 PM onward. I won't be able to make the one on December 6th, but perhaps I'll be there on January 3rd. Cheers!

in the GD thread. I'm in northwest Ohio, Toledo to be exact, and while I don't know anything about Zanesville, I do know that Columbus is a lot of fun. If you come north on a visit, Toledo has a great zoo, a world-class museum, and we are about an hour to an hour-an-a-half east of Cedar Point (I worked there one summer). Because we are practically in between Ann Arbor and Columbus, I consider Toledo to be ground zero in the Ohio State/Michigan battle every November. I don't follow football, mind you, but a couple of weeks ago, on a Saturday, I was puttering around the house, and kept hearing shouting and hooting. It was from the bar a block a way and they were watching the "big" game (the windows were shut tight). People take the rivalry very, very seriously.

Toledo is so close to Michigan (my sister lives in north Toledo and can walk to Michigan), that there has been talk, in the past, to become part of Michigan. This is usually the result of being ignored by Columbus, which concentrates on the three C's (Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati). There was a war over Toledo in 1835-36, you can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toledo_War.

Toledo is also centrally located between Detroit and Chicago, two cities I just love, and is on the Maumee River, which empties into Lake Erie.

Oh, and Toledo is a Democratic town. Always. Jeep is located here as well as the GM powertrain plant. And the most excellent Marcy Kaptur is our congress-person. She represents the ninth district which includes Toledo.

So, while you may be in Zanesville, Toledo is just up the road a pace. You should come and visit! And welcome to Ohio!

On Edit: Thanks for that Drinking Liberally link. There are two Toledo-area chapters! I am going to check them out.
