Callahan OUT...Pelini IN???
Nebraska Husker Coach Bill Callahan was fired this morning at 7:30 am.

At 7:40, the school fight song was played from Mueller Tower (a bell tower located near the stadium).

The Lincoln Journal Star is reporting that Bo Pelini (former defensive coordinator) has been contacted about the job.

:woohoo:

For some reason, I find the fight song thing highly amusing. Kinda like when the national anthem is played after a dictator is unseated. Overly dramatic? Heck yeah. Fabulous anyway? Damn skippy!

Also, I'd like to go on the record saying that I was one of the people calling for Bo Pelini to be named head coach 4 years ago. If I ruled the world, we could have saved ourselves the horror of the Callahan years. But I digress.

Look out, Husker-haters...we'll be back!

:woohoo:

1. I dunno -- it's all speculation, of course, but I've read several rumors that Pelini will
wait to see if the LSU job opens up (although Les Miles stock dropped a bit yesterday ). I've also seen speculation that Arkansas might pursue him. I know he coached at Nebraska, but it's not a slam dunk that he'll take it. Now that Pedersen is gone there's probably a better chance ... the coaching carousel will be interesting this year, for sure ...

2. I know it's not a slam dunk
but I think we've got a fairly good chance, since Pelini he coached there...and, most importantly, all of the trash has been removed.

Besides, St. Thomas of Osborne can be quite convincing. ;)

Regardless, as you said, it will be quite interesting!

3. I wonder how long Osborne will be the AD and who he'll pick as his replacement
I think that might be an important factor in whether Pelini comes as well ... Osborne is still an "interim" AD, right? I'm sure he'll pick a more suitable replacement than his predecessor was--or is there any chance that he might just stick around for a few years?

7. He will be around for a while
when he was named "interim" AD, he said that he would remain until the Huskers were back on track. And he has repeatedly said that we have a long road ahead of us. I'd be shocked if he goes anywhere anytime soon.

Honestly, I think the "interim" title was how Chancellor Perlman convinced Osborne to come back...there was an out-clause, of sorts. But Tom seems to have really taken to the job. I look for the "interim" to be dropped from his title.

4. oh, and let me also say Congratulations
I'm not sure the fight song is an overreaction at all--that guy was a disaster, and a bad idea from the start. He destroyed what was left of the OU-Nebraska rivalry, and this season had to have been painful for Nebraska fans. I'm happy to see him gone :toast:

8. Thank you
You're right...nothing short of a disaster. Though I think Callahan is taking an unfair part of the blame. Pederson and Kevin Cosgrove did MORE than their fair share.

Not that I'm crying any rivers over the loss of Callahan. Far from it, in fact.

Your post was the perfect example of what's so great about the OU-NU rivalry. We want the other team to be at their best. Those knock-out battle of the greats games are what it's about, not beating up on a team that's obviously seen better days.

Here's to an ass-kicking Big 12! :toast:

5. Did you catch Coach Fran's act?

So, he comes to the press conference, says he is resigning. Then, as Bill Byrne starts talking and saying some platitudes, Fran gets up and leaves. An asshole to the end.

Look for former Packers head coach and Houston Texans assistant Ray Sherman to be hired. AN OFFENSIVE HEAD COACH!!! YES!!!

:woohoo:

6. To be fair
I'd get up and leave if Bill Byrne started talking, too. ;)

Be careful what you wish for. We just dumped a former NFL coach who was quite offensive...in more ways than one. Look where that got us. I wish you the best though!

Here's to a highly competitive, kick-ass Big 12!
