10. Anything with 9ths or 13ths in it pisses 'em off?
God forbid there should be anything but straight-off four, fives, and ones (power chords, all of them, of course) in a song.

11. Yup, they're too talented.
Truly brilliant musicians are intimidating to those who thrive on the Officially Enshrined Mediocrity. :D

Spinning Aja as we type,

16. Steely Dan is the very best of the "slick" FM studio rock...
Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 05:04 PM by Dr Fate
The scene they helped to spawn wasnt so hot-( coked up middle aged guys that no teen garage band could hope to relate too)---but I agree that The Dan is The Shit.

They are an example of the genre originator being better than anything else in the genre.

18. What's wrong with being something that garage bands don't relate to?
I don't give a shit about garage bands.

19. Well I do give a shit about garage bands. And I also like Steely Dan.

W/o garage bands, "do it yourself" bands and bands who play live, all you have is studio oriented corporate rock that is very expensive to make. Impossible to make if you dont have connections, in fact. That's not to say that some corporate rock is not worthwhile (see Steely Dan)

But You cant reproduce that sound with out TONS of money & time-it's no wonder that Rock & Roll on the radio has been suffering slow death since that era.

As I said, The Dan is great, but generally, the whole FM studio scene killed the Rock & Roll asthetic and shut out the types of bands & people that make it great...namely, young people who are not virtuosos but who can otherwise produce catchy, energetic & inspiring music.

Produced stuff like the Beach Boys, Steely Dan & Phil Spector can be amazing, but there has to be music that can be played live and by teenagers if the Rock & Roll style is to continue...

Eitherway, we both agree that The Dan is The Shit.

21. "Katy Lied"...damn, what an ALBUM.
Best vocals of Michael McDonald's career, IMHO...which doesn't mean a hell of a lot to people who don't like him.

There's also a tough, world-weary stance in most of the lyrics that has an underlying layer of tenacity and a refusal to give up...real yin / yang stuff.

I also feel that "Boston Rag" (from "Countdown To Ecstasy") is the best song never recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (a really strong Graham Nash vibe to the harmony vocals).

And from that same album, how could anybody NOT love a band that writes lyrics like "Show business kids making movies of themselves, you know they don;t give a fuck about anybody else?"
