i'm confused about the FreeRice thing
according to the FAQ at freerice.com, the rice is paid for by advertising revenue (according to the FAQ, the site is non-profit).

i don't really know much about how advertising revenue is generated on the interwebs. does a site receive money simply by hosting the ad, or is it per-click, or is it based on purchases made after linking from the hosting site?

i saw a news story on FreeRice and immediately became curious as to who was actually paying for the rice.

4. As best as I understand it
it's a per click rate.

Every time you guess a word you are adding to what the sponsors pay the website. The total rice grains you get right, is how much the companies pay the site to buy that amount of rice.

What I'm not clear on is whether or not the site gets paid when you guess a wrong answer or just your collective winnings.

And I think someone said 1000 grains = 1 C rice.
