Well, I just retrieved a balloon.
Cameron (5) and Corinne (3) are our next door 'foster' grandkids.
Cute as they can be and just funny as hell.

I heard the doorbell ring and Miz t. got it.
Then Cam and Corrine came tumbling into my office.
All in one breath Cameron said "Mr. trof* we went to a birthday party and I got a green balloon and I came over to show it to Miz t. and Corrine bumped me and I let go of the balloon and it's on your ceiling now."

"Let me see what I can do."
We have a 14' cathedral ceiling in the great room.
I got the ladder from the garage and rescued the balloon.
I made a slip knot in the ribbon and put it around Cameron's wrist.
"See? Now you won't lose it, but when you get home you can get it off your wrist."
"WOW! COOL!"
She thinks I am a genius.
:-)

Yesterday she came over in a fairy princess outfit and said "We're playin' like I'm the GOOD fairy princess and Corinne's the bad ol' ugly stepmother."
Corrine is not yet old enough to choose her roles and usually goes along with playing the villainess.
I don't think this will last much longer.

*Addressing adults who are 'almost family' as Miz/Miss or Mr. with first name is a southern thang.

2. These two are a source of constant delight.
Their mom and dad are pretty neat too.
Yesterday morning Jen (the mom) called at about 7.
"I know this is early, but I know you're up. (She knows us well ;-))
Do y'all have a banana?"

Me: "Hon? Do we have a banana?"
"Nope. We ate the last ones yesterday."

"Sorry, Jen. Yes, we have no bananas."
"OK, thanks. Corrine is watching Dora and wants to be a monkey."

4. you ARE a genuis
What fun to have little ones around who think you're the greatest.

And you know what?

They're getting as much out of this relationship as YOU are.

 for being a great "grandpa".

5. Thanks. I have two blood related.
Jack, 5, and Charlotte, 5 months.
Buy they're 1500 miles away.
:-(

Cam and Corrine kinda fill the void here at home.

6. Count your blessings trof
It's hard to put a value on how much you can benefit from having kids in your life, even if they aren't yours. When my landlords wife left and took the little one away, I started to miss that insistent banging on the door looking for a little attention.

7. Too right. We also have a 'next door dog'.
Lucy is their beagle.
She spends at least as much time at our house as theirs.
And we don't have to feed her (unless they're out of town) or pay the vet bills.
But we have full access to a lovable little dog for as long as we want.
Cool.

9. You are totally the greatest grandad ever.
Edited on Wed Nov-14-07 07:55 PM by Midlodemocrat
Your grandbabies are really, really lucky.

And, I know these two aren't your grandbabies, but if you're that awesome with someone else's grandbabies, I can only imagine how awesome you are with your own. Your daughter is very, very lucky. I'm jealous.

10. Aw, c'mon. But thanks.
I never thought I'd make it this far.
Really.

Back in my 20s I seriously didn't think I'd live to be more than 30-35.

Combination of the 'live hard, die young, leave a beautiful (or maybe charred) corpse fighter pilot mystique and the general life-on-the-edge helling around I did back then.

Marriage and kids was just NOT in the picture.
And now, 40 something years later, here I am.
A grandpa.

There's hope for all of us.
:-)
