How can you not 'get' Dick Van Dyke?
That's what people keep asking me. I can't stand his guts.

2. A wonderful comic actor.
A truly great physical comic. Plenty of episodes of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" to see that.

Sorry you don't like him.

4. You see one pratfall, you've seen them all
He'd even telegraph them - he'd start grinning before he tripped over the couch for the umpteenth time.

5. But even more than the pratfalls
was the fact that he was a very rare talent: both comic and straight-man.

He had his share of lines in the Dick Van Dyke show, but he REALLY was a foil for MTM, Morey Amsterdam and Rose-Marie. He let them shine, all while still letting his own talents show.

It's rare to see a comic who does that.

17. And you don't find that BRILLIANT!
Dude, he's frickin' winking at you before he trips! I suppose you hate vaudeville, too....

6. Have you seen Mary Poppins?
I know, his accent was laughable... but I loved him in that role!

And in the MTM show, too... :)

8. He was wonderful in "Mary Poppins"
Yes, the Cockney accent is laughable...but he was wonderful as Bert. Perfect chemistry between Van Dyke and Julie Andrews.

22. Not so big on that one
but still good!

Another of my favorites is An American In Paris. Mostly for the Gershwin, though. :)

23. I like it for sentimental reasons
my daughter played Hodel in a Fiddler production. I usually cry when I see it.

Yes, Gershwin...

I like musicals in general, spanning a wide range of styles. And I even hold pop star Andrew Lloyd Webber in high regard-- Phantom being among my all-time favs.

I wanted to marry him. And it was Mary Poppins I first saw him in.

Slept through most of the movie, but I was still in love!
