1. I think they were kids.
They had started an adult society, like in Lord of the Flies, but quickly found that being their own bosses was not as fun as they had supposed.

3. They continued the sodomy, though, for it was the only thing, eventually, that bound them together.

5. They were young adults
Frodo was 33, to the day, when the story began. Bilbo turned 111 the same day.

Hobbits are a different race of humanoid. Small but tough, country-type folks with big leathery feet covered in hair (no shoes).

6. They were adult hobbits.
There are a number of nonhuman people in LOTR land. Hobbits are short, long-lived humans that act live English farmers. Dwarves are slightly taller, but shorter than humans, and live underground. Elves are about as big as humans but have pointy ears, never grow old and are really aloof. Then there are orcs and goblins which exist as something for the good guys to hack, shoot, crush and stab.

8. My wife was born overseas & had no idea about anything LotR
her first comment when she saw Frodo jump into Gandalf's cart at the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring movie was something like, "that boy is so short!"

11. Hobbit-oriented distress is the number one killer of laboratory mice.
I shudder to think what effects it can have in humans. Take care of yourself, lioness.
