Have you ever sent an e-mail to the wrong person?
Yesterday I sent my boss an e-mail intended for my husband by accident.

Thankfully, it was just some snide comment about Ron Paul and one of his supporters. It could have been much worse.

So, how about you?

3. True story.
Back when email was a new toy, the company I worked for had just been set up for it.

Two of my cube mates, Dan & Jim spent several giggly school-boy minutes passing obscene messages back & forth. Just when it was about to get annoying, all the giggling suddenly stopped & Dan walked by me with a sickly gray look on his face.

You see, our boss (and company VP) was named Jim too.

4. Sigh. I sent a poring-my-heart-out love letter email to my future wife.
We were both working at Blue Cross of MA. I mention the company for a reason...
She was an analyst and I was one of the CICS programmers(in charge of mainframe communications)

I agonized over the letter for hours. I re-read it dozens of times and then hit send.

Because of my job as CICS programmer, I had super user privileges as far as messaging
was concerned. In fact, I could even send a broadcast message to everyone.

Everyone In The Company.

One second after I hit "send" I realized what I had done.

A few minutes later I saw her coming down the row of cubicles. She said
"I got you message", smiling.

I said, "Yeah. I know".

14. I think that's very sweet
What a way to declare your love. And it must have worked as she is your wife. Hope you are both still happy.

8. No but I received a doozy of a one that was not meant for me
While working MAA in the Navy I was investigating an alleged (it turned out it was true) "wrongdoing" of a Sailor in my command. The Sailor's boss thought that I was being overzealous in my pursuit and emailed my boss doing everything but calling me Hitler and making veiled threats upon my career. They had been emailing back and forth and my boss put me on as a copy to, the other guy responded to all. I made sure the other guy's boss was called as a witness.

13. I lost a relationship over that one before
And I've said some pretty embarrassing things in texts that I thought were going to friends but instead went to my sister.

10. Almost the same thing as yours
Sent a political joke about Bush to a guy named George in our company, and it went to a client name George at the U.S.P.S. instead. (That auto-insert function of Explorer is DANGEROUS). Fortunately the joke was 100% clean and not too vicious.

Also, I have a policy that has served me REALLY well of never emailing anything that I wouldn't want read widely. Last year, someone emailed me a picture of a bunch of my college friends who all looked amazing 20 years later, except one guy who had gotten fat and bald. I wrote a snarky reply, then remembered my policy, and then changed to the more benign "the only one I didn't recognize was Tim". Well, of COURSE the guy forwarded it to Tim, but at least I was able to weasel my way out of that one saying his hair had gotten really blond down there in Florida, whereas something like "how come only Tim got fat and bald?" would've been a little tougher to handle.

11. No, but my friend once had his email copied to the entire school
There was a big email debate at our school about the quality (or lack thereof) of one of our professors. My friend sent a private email to one of the pro-professor students with some rather choice and harsh words about this particular professor. The guy ended up writing a response to my friend, but he ended up copying the entire school with the response, which contained my friend's original message. I felt pretty bad for my friend that day.

15. I did that last night in fact.
I clicked reply to group instead of reply to sender. I made a comment about Wesley Clark so it was no biggie.

16. This week I had sexual harassment "training" at work.
After my session was over while joking with a coworker about it she opened an email that was misdirected to her by somebody in another business unit. It was pictures from some hot firemen calendar and the people sending them to each other got pretty graphic about what they wanted to do to them. My coworker didn't know the people sending these messages back and forth but my supervisor and I did. He and I started laughing about what it will be like talking to them again.

I've had people accidentally send me messages that embarrassed them but luckily I haven't done it.

18. Oh yes, and being the sys admin was the only reason I kept my job
Edited on Sat Nov-10-07 11:06 PM by DS1
I'd photoshopped a great white shark's head over the company lawyer's head in our public photo of him. Was going to send it to a friend, but since I had the lawyer in mind, I sent it to him instead.

Realizing what I'd done, I unplugged their internet feed from the frame-relay we had set up, changed his email password, logged in through the web access system, deleted it, then changed a bunch of other random accounts' passwords to cover my track and left voicemails for them all explaining that some maintenance had to be done and their new password was xxxxx
